Won't somebody please think of the children?
That's the message the U.S. government is pushing in a new blog post attempting to dispel rumors about the rapidly approaching end of the world.
"Unfortunately, these rumors have many people frightened, especially children," reads the post at USA.gov. "The world will not end on December 21, 2012, or any day in 2012."
David Morrison, a planetary astronomer and senior scientist for NASA, tells USA.gov that at least a once a week I get a message from a young person -- as young as 11 -- who says they are ill and/or contemplating suicide because of the coming doomsday.
unhappycamper comment: Damn. I was gonna try to find a shitload of OMG, roll it in the big paper below and watch the tsunami come in from my front deck.
And yes, that is a monster paper that came with the album.

(25,183 posts)The next couple of weeks will be full of this tripe from news media that can't seem to find anything significant to write about.
I don't believe any of the eschatological crap put out by any Western religions, just because someone's got a wild ass guess about what the Mayans might have thought doesn't make that any more true.

(11,830 posts)it's not ending in just a few weeks. I wish they would put this much emphasis on what's happening to our climate, though, because that's not backed my Mayan iconography, but scientific fact.
What I'm hearing about climate change is a helluva lot more frightening to me than an ancient calendar.

(5,756 posts)No one predicts that as a doomsday. They plan a drunken party for the start of the next 12 month calendar.
The Mayans just aren't around anymore to set up their next long count calendar.
