In Israel, both the right and left wing of the Hebrew press asked why, after losing the U.N. vote 138 to 9, an Israeli government would announce a move sure to further its international isolation. (Technically, the way Palestine is run hasnt changed because of the vote; the Palestinian Authority simply has a different status which happens to have the word state in it within the international organization, with a few new legal prerogatives.) In Maariv, the conservative columnist Ben-Dror Yemini called Netanyahus move Pavlovian and wrote, Rather than thank the American administration for its amazing support on Thursday at the U.N. vote, the slap in the face came on Friday with the announcement of the construction of thousands of additional housing units. In Yedioth Ahronoth, Nahum Barnea reported from the Saban Forum, a Washington, D.C., gathering of prominent Israeli and Americans in which the rules constrain attendees from saying who said what. The gist of a speech by a prominent American politician (identified in the same paper the next day as Obamas former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel) was: You Israelis are ingrates. Youve screwed yourselves. Barneas conclusion: Something bad has happened over the years to the production line in Israeli politics.

I hope the people of Israel will start to say no to this bullying. It only makes their enemies more steadfast, and it sure makes it hard to be a friend.

Hopefully, Israeli voters will do the sane thing and vote Netanyahu's pro-war, pro-injustice government out of power this January. It's never too late to do the right thing.

(350 posts)quotation marks in a context that implies authorship for the quote (and the headline of the article implies that Rahm Emanual said "You've Screwed Yourselves" about Israel).
With that said, Netanyahu has got to go and he has screwed Israel (but he's screwed Palestine a thousand times worse than he's screwed Israel).

(10,271 posts)Yeah, that was people figuring out that if Isreal maintains the status quo regarding Palestein (no sovereign State), by mid-century the Govt. in Tel Aviv will be running an aparthied state, and you don't get to DO that and still call yourself a modern, western, civilized, democratically-run Nation State. You DAMN sure won't get to call yourself a favored Ally of the United States after that happens.

(33,688 posts)absolutely anything, and the US will stand behind it. I have little doubt that if Palestinian civilians were put up against the wall and machine-gunned that the US government would find a way to excuse it while issuing a "sharply worded protest" like the cop in the Python sketch who said "Halt!! Or I will say 'halt' again."
The Israeli right is as nauseatingly hypocritical and authoritarian as the American right.

Seems like a logical move to me. Now, if the US isolated Israel by abstaining on a few key votes in the Security Council.....
