Arizona Gov. Brewer can't run again in 2014, Sec. of State Bennett says

Source: Arizona Daily Star

The state's chief election officer said Monday that his interpretation of state law is that Republican Jan Brewer's reign as governor must end in January 2015, no matter what she and her lawyer say.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett said he understands Brewer believes that the two years she spent finishing off Democrat Janet Napolitano's term do not count toward the two-term limit voters mandated in 1992.

... Bennett's interest in Brewer's legal options in 2014 is more than academic: He already has formed an exploratory committee for governor for the 2014 election.

Bennett sidestepped a question of whether he would take legal action to keep Brewer off the ballot should she seek the nomination.

Jane Hull served as governor after Fife Symington was convicted...at the time she was serving as Secretary of State, Arizona's version of lieutenant governor.

Finishing up Symington's term counted as her first term...she was elected in her own right in 1998. There was talk that she also was going to challenge Arizona's Constitution.

Brewer is grasping at straws with this...she knows that once out of office she has nothing to offer...and it scares the hell out of her!

I am ok with a Governor or President serving longer than 8 years if they take over an unexpired term.
