Something big just happened in Egypt right now. Something very big. This is the second wave of the Egyptian revolution.
There are many tens of thousands in the streets (who can count such numbers?) all over Egypt.
The Presidential Guard has fled. The CSF (Central Security Forces) has deserted its posts around the palace. Sh*t is going down in Egypt. And don't even bother with Al-Jazeera. It fast lost its last shreds of credibility in the Middle East. Only RT is reporting this honestly.
Tents are going up in front of the people's palace right now.
Morsi flees as angry crowd storms palace in Cairo, battles riot police
This article is from before that:
Egypt protest turns violent
5 Dec 2012
...
n a brief outburst, police fired tear gas to stop protesters approaching the palace in the capital's Heliopolis district. Morsi was in the palace conducting business as usual while the protesters gathered outside. But he left for home through a back door when the crowds "grew bigger," according to a presidential official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.
The violence erupted when protesters pushed aside a barricade topped with barbed wire several hundred yards from the palace walls. Police fired tear gas, and then retreated. With that barricade removed, protesters moved closer to the palace's walls, with police apparently choosing not to try and push the crowds back.
Protesters also commandeered a police van, climbing atop the armoured vehicle to wave Egypt's red, white and black flag.
In the coastal city of Alexandria, some 10,000 opponents of Morsi gathered in the centre of the country's second largest metropolis. They chanted slogans against the leader and his Islamic fundamentalist group, the Muslim Brotherhood.

(62,325 posts)to notice its slide into MSM status during the revolutions and once it was revealed that Qatar had troops on the ground in Libya, their bias in that reporting was explained.
The Egyptian people are not about to go back to their previous status.. I remember some of the more prominent leaders of that revolution wondering if they had left Tahrir Square too soon after seeing visits to their country by Western Leaders and knowing what that could mean.
Over 800 people were murdered by 'our friend and ally, Mubarak' during the uprising and it's easy to understand why they won't accept having those deaths be in vain by returning to the previous status that was the reason for the uprising in the first place. I wish them success.
They did say that removing Mubarak was only the first step.

(36,418 posts)Authoritarians make the strangest bed-fellows. This from last January 30, when the Spring was fresh, and all things still seemed filled with the possibility that peace, freedom and good might break out in the world:
http://www.thenation.com/blog/158160/neocons-attack-egyptian-dissident-mohamed-elbaradei-again#
ElBaradeis emergence has angered pro-Mubarak neoconservatives, such as Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice president of the Council of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, which is closely aligned with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. There is a myth being created that ElBaradei is a human rights activist," Hoenlein told an Orthodox Jewish website on Sunday. He is a stooge of Iran, and I don't use the term lightly. When he was the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, for which he got a Nobel Peace Prize, he fronted for them, he distorted the reports."
Hysterical rhetoric about ElBaradei is nothing new. The same people who were wrong about Iraqs nonexistent WMD program are once again trying to distort his work, this time as a prominent dissident in Egypt.
Over at Firedoglake, Marcy Wheeler has an excellent recap of the past neoconservative smear campaign against ElBaradei. Before the invasion of Iraq, the Bush Administration pooh-poohed his warning that there was no evidence of ongoing prohibited nuclear or nuclear-related activities in Iraq and paid no attention to the fact that the administrations claim that Saddam Hussein was pursuing enriched uranium from Niger was based on forged documents, according to IAEA reporting. Despite the fact that almost everything ElBaradei said about Iraq turned out to be correct, the Bush Administration tapped his phone and led a major campaign to prevent him from leading for a third term at IAEA. Lawrence Wilkerson, a top aide to Secretary of State Colin Powell, said that thenUN Ambassador John Bolton was going out of his way to bad-mouth ElBaradei. Nonetheless, ElBaradei was unanimously re-elected as IAEA chief in 2005 and, shortly thereafter, awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his arms control work. I dont think we were effective in our campaign to oppose him, Bolton later admitted.

(53,339 posts)CAIRO A protest by at least 100,000 Egyptians outside the presidential palace in Cairo turned violent on Tuesday as tensions grew over Islamist President Mohammed Morsi's seizure of nearly unrestricted powers and a draft constitution hurriedly adopted by his allies.
Crowds around the capital and in the coastal city of Alexandria were still swelling several hours after nightfall. The large turnout signaled sustained momentum for the opposition, which brought out at least 200,000 protesters to Cairo's Tahrir Square a week ago and a comparable number on Friday. They are demanding the Morsi rescind decrees that placed him above judicial oversight.
In a brief outburst, police fired tear gas to stop protesters approaching the palace in the capital's Heliopolis district. Morsi was in the palace conducting business as usual while the protesters gathered outside. But he left for home through a back door when the crowds "grew bigger," according to a presidential official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

(62,325 posts)popular Wordwide btw. Not surprised to see someone jump in to trash it though. Same thing always happens whenever the Corporate Controlled MSM is challenged by some independent news organization. We see the same thing happening with Wikileaks.
The truth is a threat to the propaganda daily delivered to the people by Corporate interests. As someone famous said recently, 'they are losing control of the message'.. and it was said without a shred of awareness that the news is not supposed a 'message' but so revealing that our leaders do view it that way.
Lol, I laughed about your Alex Jones comment. I guess you have no problem with liars and crooks like Grover Norquist and Karl Rove occupying space on our 'truth-telling' MSM. No media is more questionable than our own.
I have never seen Alex Jones on RT btw. But all voices should be heard in any democracy, we are grown up enough to be able to sort out who is 'crazy' and who is not. The notion that we need 'government nannies' to sort it all out for us, gives me the chills frankly.
As I said, our MSM gives a platform to totally insane and off-the-wall corrupt crooks like Grover Norquist and Karl Rove as if they were 'respectable' sources of news, and on a regular basis.
I'll take an occasional platform for CTs any day as they have no real influence over this country's well being. But Norquist and Rove, have managed to contribute to the downhill slide of this country

It was founded in 2005 with 30 million opening money and 30 million for the first year's budget, half from the Russian government and half from large banks friendly to the government.
So if you can actually say that a government founded and funded news organization is 'some independent news organization' I'd have to ask the obvious question. What are the independent of?
Are they ever directly critical of say, Putin? Not so much. Have they told the truth about the war in South Ossetia? Human Rights Watch says not so much.
They are a major, mainline news and commentary outfit with an agenda and a huge budget (300 million this year). They are no different from other organizations similar to them. I find your comment to the other poster 'I guess you don't mind Karl Rove' to be snide, and I have to ask if you really think tow Roves make a right. Does FoxNews existing mean that any other news outlet is above reproach? Intellectually dishonest stuff.
No one with 300 million and a direct tie to a government is independent of that government.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)demonstrations was on RT.
My comment about Rove was not snide, it is a fact. He escaped prosecution in the Plame affair, eg, because Libby covered for all of them and took the fall.
He escaped prosecution in the firing of the US Attorneys because he thumbed his nose at Congress and refused to respond to subpoenas.
I fail to see why you thought my comment about this obvious liar and dirty trickster who has had an enormous negative influence on this country was 'snide'. Pointing out facts is now snide? The comment I responded to was using the talking point which is apparently the one settled on, regarding Alex Jones who I have never even seen on RT btw, it's not like he's a respected presence there as Rove and Palin et al on our MSM. Imo, Jones is a harmless CT who has zero influence in this country while Rove et al actually do. To compare the effect someone like Jones has which is practically zero, to that of Rove and all the Tea Party liars we have to endure on our MSM, while voices like Amy Goodman eg, are never heard, is simply ridiculous. Let him speak, let everyone speak, I don't need a nanny censoring who I see on TV.
RT has given a voice to many Progressives on the 'left' in this country that have been blocked from our own MSM such as Thom Hartmann, Amy Goodman and jouranlists like Pepe Escobar while presenting Right Wing lunatics and criminals as if they were oracles of wisdom. RT's coverage of the American people themselves, during OWS's early days was fair and did not include, speaking of 'snide', the Corporate Media's constant baseless attacks on them.
No media is completely independent, our own MSM least of all. So having other media which at least recognizes that there is a 'left' in this country is something most Democrats should welcome. Their international coverage and documentaries about parts of the world we know little about, is for the most part, excellent. But if people are happy with the MSM that is their choice.

(20,783 posts)but what is noteworthy to me is the discrediting of Al Jazeera. Unless more sunstantiation is provided, it should be seen as the gold standard for news in that region.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)years. But people began to notice the reporting becoming less neutral a few years ago and it turned out they were not just imagining things. The sad thing was that because of its excellent reputation, people were more likely to trust them and were puzzled about what they were seeing and hearing.
Several reporters in different countries resigned in protest over not being allowed to put their work on the air, which was not what they were accustomed to. In censoring them that way, a slant was put on the news something they had become famous for NOT doing.
The bias was very obvious during the Libya and Syria conflicts and reporters stated they had footage that was kept off the air, showing a side of the 'rebels' which placed in doubt the claim that they were a 'grassroots' organization. So as it turned out, people were right, things had changed.
But what really blew their reputation was when Wikileaks cables revealed that the man who is credited with Al Jazeera's huge success had met with US Intelligence/CIA in 2005 and agreed to remove certain images of the Iraq War from its website.
Al Jazeera Head Suddenly Resigns Amidst WikiLeaks Revelations[/b
.
The cables reveal that Khanfa met with U.S. intelligence in 2005 to discuss what they felt was Al Jazeera's negative coverage of the war in Iraq.
One cable shows that Khanfa agreed to remove "two images depicting wounded children in a hospital and a woman with a badly wounded face" at an American officials request, but asked that his collaboration be kept a secret.
In his resignation letter yesterday he made no mention of the cables.
That was a shattering blow to their credibility and combined with their own journalists dissatisfaction and the viewers wondering why their coverage seemed to have changed they really have lost what made them one of the most trusted news agencies in the world.
Seems our CIA influences media all over the world and when they can't, they find ways to destroy them. See Wikileaks.

(20,783 posts)I will look at that further. For the moment I retract the statement that they should be the gold standard.

(62,325 posts)to the old Soviet Union?
Some people in this country are so stuck in the last Century while the rest of the world moves on. I have to say I thought it was only on the Right that this paranoid fear of 'commies' was still present.
RT is a great news source, especially for Progressives who actually care about hearing Progressives voices on the air, finally, like Amy Goodman and investigative journalists like Greg Palast and Pepe Escobar, all censored by our own version of Pravda.
It is wonderful to be able to hear those voices finally. And without the screaming and yelling and constant commercial interruptions we get on the Corporate Media here.
They give voice to people across the political spectrum, and from all over the world. Crosstalk is one of the best political shows on the air. And the variety of viewpoints are something we just don't get here, leading to a country where half the population still votes for the most extreme rightwing party we've ever had.
No wonder RT is growing in popularity across this country and the rest of the world. The US media is among the least trusted anywhere since we learned how complicit they are in disseminating Corporate and MIC propaganda without a single challenge and since they removed all Progressive voices from the air.

Their take on what happened during those elections is nothing you'll read about in the US media. Let's just say they didn't appreciate the outside interference to install another puppet regime as votes were played around with.
And even if he was elected fair and square, after how hard they fought for change and all the lives lost, only a bunch of sheep would lie down for 5,8,12,20 years being represented by someone who was not fulfilling the will of the people.
They understand very well how much Washington has been interfering in their affairs.

"US calls on #Egypt protesters to have restraint" ( http://bit.ly/WHtxKf ) - but why not arm them and bomb the govt like you did in #Libya ?
Joseph Mayton | 4 December 2012
CAIRO: The United States has called on anti-President Mohamed Morsi protesters and the government in Egypt to show restraint. The State Department spokesman Mark Toner was quoted as saying that the White House was also following the situation closely.
We would simply urge that protesters express their views peacefully and that they be given the environment, if you will, to protest peacefully, AFP reported Toner as saying.
....
Others said this was the revolution continuing. A march to the palace continues to grow on Tuesday night, with the chanting loud and boisterous. We want the downfall of the regime, is being screamed, in unison, toward the house that Morsi has lived in since early July.
....
Even the countrys state television has joined the propaganda train to support their embattled president, calling the protesters supporters of a foreign agenda. The same channels that also told Egyptians the same things during the January 25 uprising.

(35,568 posts)"Freedom or we die," chanted a crowd of several hundred outside a mosque in the Abbasiyah district. "Mohammed Morsi! Illegitimate! Brotherhood! Illegitimate!" they also yelled, alluding to the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood from which Morsi hails.
...
Several hundred protesters also gathered outside Morsi's residence in an upscale suburb not far from the Itihadiya. "Down with the sons of dogs. We are the power and we are the people" They chanted.

The opposition has yet to say whether it intends to focus its energy on rallying support for a boycott of the Dec. 15 vote or defeating the draft with a "no" vote.
"We haven't made any decisions yet, but I'm leaning against a boycott and toward voting 'no'," said Hossam al-Hamalawy of the Socialist Revolutionaries, a key group behind last year's uprising. "We want a (new) constituent assembly that represents the people and we keep up the pressure on Morsi."

(408 posts)much like Obama got his yanked at Benghazi. The message seems to be "We own you so don't get any funny ideas about writing your own ticket, and here's a little mischief to show we mean business." I don't think Benghazi worked out quite as planned because instead of being handed his walking papers on Nov. 6 Obama emerged with the scalp of a certain D. Petraeus hanging from his belt. Things might work out for Morsi too and at this point I'm hoping they do before Egypt loses its canal and oil resources.

(10,745 posts)In fact, If we're going to compare Morsi to the two candidates, then Morsi is like the Egyptian version of Mitt Romney. Only, thankfully, in our case, the real Mitt got booted out on his ass at the ballot box. Hopefully, Morsi will befall the same fate as well: Many of the revolutionaries, the socialists in particular, know this man's true colors. He truly IS a Middle Eastern version of Mittens, only scarier.

(408 posts)Because now they like Mubarek and the security chiefs who supposedly fired on them last spring? Morsi is also trying to get a constitution ratified on schedule and keep the courts from dissolving what's left of the Egyptian legislature. I guess the "protesters" got tired of democracy already? Fickle crowd, these protesters. Funny how they keep popping up whenever heads of state including our own become inconvenient.

(10,745 posts)I mean, let's face it: If a Republican was in office, and they weren't feeding anti-Muslim hysteria to profit off of 9/11, I betcha people like Matty Sludge might actually be cheering for Morsi.

(10,745 posts)....When this very organization has fascist roots going all the way back to WWII, and before!
I also have wondered, from time to time, if perhaps some of the more crooked factions of Western intel might also have been, or still are, trying to help Morsi and his pals stay in for as long as possible.

(35,568 posts)I'm not even going there but the evidence is there. As'ad AbuKhalil aka [link:angryarab.blogspot.nl|AngryArab News], professor of political science at California State University, touched on the historical US funding today. Then we've got Allrian on his way to the US to "consult" with the White House right now.
Historical US funding of the Muslim Brotherhood
During the Cold War, it was not a secret that the US and the Muslim Brotherhood were close allies. In his new book, Eric Rouleau talks about US funding (through Saudi Arabia) of the Muslim Brotherhood. This is something on which more light should be shed. In fact, the book about the Cultural and Political Cold War in the Arab World has not been written yet.
