(31,706 posts)Democrats are united and ready to vote...it's the rushpublicans that can't figure where they stand on this situation other than they don't want to raise taxes on their rich benefactors. If a deal isn't struck, taxes will go up on them and the rushpublicans will get the blame for "going over the cliff"...weakening their already confused and weakened position.
Boner is fighting for control of his own caucus. For the past two years he's let the inmates run the asylum and that helped to the disastrous election results. While he won't admit it publicly, Boner knows if he doesn't reign in the extremists, the next cliff he goes over, won't be a fiscal one, but a political one.
Here's the rub...he still has to face a leadership vote in January an has to tread lightly to try to get some kind of deal done before the end of the year and not pissing off too many teabaggers who may try to challenge his leadership. Charlie's right that if it looks like Boner is caving on negotiations, Bullshit Mountain and hate radio will turn up the poutrage and try to challenge his "leadership". Methinks Boner's at the 19th hole right now with yet another whisky sour...
