(1,485 posts)I lived in the country-
It was common practice to throw a litter(dogs, cats) into a sack with a brick, and drown the whole group in the river.
This was common on some farms where cats tended to overpopulate an area.
I came across sacks of corpses in the river and plastic bags of litters on the side of the road.
Others just shot them. There was no one to take them. There was no where to take them.
I would not do it, I could not do it.

(42,239 posts)on BANJO-L, a group for those who are interested in / play the banjo, someone posts on the subject of using cat skins for banjo heads.

(1,485 posts)not too far removed.
I have been thinking of a banjo to add to my guitars--I assume I do not NEED a catskin banjo to be a purist?

(1,922 posts)Drop a litter into a towsack and shotgun them.
That can leave quite an impression on a kid, especially when the kid (me) had to do the shooting.
But, as you said, there was no workable alternative.

(1,485 posts)I was encouraged to shoot certain birds, as well.
Now, I am a good shot and want to shoot nothing.
I was always a bit sickened by the old farmers who disposed of inconvenient mammals this way. But I did understand it.
I finally watched the video of the story. It seems to have little to do with my own experience.
I am just saddened that people live this way.

(251 posts)But there really is no excuse for cruelty and ignorance. It isn't difficult to have a dog or cat spayed and/or neutered. Funny how that works to keep unwanted litters from happening. The people throwing litters in ponds or shooting them are just too lazy to be proactive.

(1,485 posts)BUT-
those I spoke of owned small farms, had no money for operations, and did not invite the critters to begin with.
I can imagine being in a position where I own a haybarn--many years ago--am poor, and do not feel responsible for those who make my barn a home.
And yes--there is an excuse for ignorance--it is ignorance itself. Folks did not always have the benefit of what is available now.
You do know--these unwanted cats were not pets, right?
Even now, if you live in the country in some areas, cats can just insinuate themselves into your life.
They can seriously harm your pet cat. Some pets die because of this. It is not so simple to just say we should spay/neuter them.
I don't like it, either.

(6,187 posts)...of putting down unwanted animals.
AFAIK, all those "horrible procedures" mentioned downthread, are still common practice away from the eyes of townies who see no problem with feeding feral animals in the streets, but are pure hell on any homeless humans who might sully their personal landscape.
You wonder why the rest of the world has such a low opinion of "Americans"? Among other things, it is because Americans will spend tens of thousands of dollars to "save" an environmentally destructive feral cat colony, but then turn round and criminalise the feeding of homeless HUMAN BEINGS. Then turn back and say "To fucking hell" with animals that are in the way of their making a profit.

(9,527 posts)She wanted to bury a cat who died, but there had been really heavy rain. So she put the body in the freezer to keep until the ground was dry enough for burial. However, she probably could have done more to disguise the cat than a ziplock.
