(CNN) -- John McAfee, the Internet security pioneer, will seek asylum Wednesday in Guatemala, where he is now located after leaving Belize, his attorney said.
Authorities in Belize want to question McAfee in the killing of a neighbor there and believe that he is still in their country.
McAfee went to Guatemala for his safety and because it was the closest border for him to cross, said Telesforo Guerra, who is McAfee's attorney and a former attorney general of Guatemala ...
But authorities in Belize think McAfee is still in that country, said Raphael Martinez, spokesman for the Belize Police Department ...

... McAfee spoke to The Associated Press in a restaurant near a high-end hotel where he is staying in Guatemala City after sneaking out of neighboring Belize. Police in Belize have called him a person of interest in the November slaying of a fellow American ex-pat but say there is no warrant for his arrest. Since there are no restrictions on his travels, it's unclear why he would need any special status in order to stay in Guatemala.
McAfee says he is being persecuted by the Belizean government, and he has sensitive information about official corruption in that country. He has hired a well-known Guatemalan lawyer to assist him.
"I need a safe place where I can actually speak out," McAfee said. "Now that I'm here I can speak freely. I can speak openly."
Belizean police have denied they are persecuting McAfee or are motivated by corruption, saying they have simply been investigating a crime about which McAfee may have information ...

(118,295 posts)Gregory Faull was killed three weeks ago - and his murder joins about 90 other Belizean homicides in 2012 for which no arrest has been made.
The primary person of interest to police, John McAfee remains on the run, a fugitive of his own design, and he continues to make a rather dramatic production out of it.
He's set up a website where he breathlessly blogs about his various imagined intrigues, not-so-near-misses with law enforcement, and other fugitive fantasies ...

... For the last few weeks the former antivirus entrepreneur, multimillionaire and well-known prankster has been on the run after Belize law enforcement named him a person of interest in connection with the death of a neighbor. McAfee believes the Belize government will harm or kill him if he meets with authorities ...
McAfee's constant Web updates push the story to a new level. Rarely does a day go by without a dramatic blog post. More than 10,000 people follow his every move on Twitter. That someone can flee a government, ostensibly to save his own life, while blogging about it, should give pause. McAfee's self-orchestrated digital reality show would not have been possible a decade ago ...
Prior to his flight, Wired was working on a story about McAfee and reports that he had - in addition to its story - hired a graphic novelist to chronicle his life in Belize. A recently released page of the commissioned book dramatically portrays a topless woman wanting to kill McAfee while he slept, but stopping because she had feelings for him ...
