Brotherhood Press Release on Pro-Democracy Demonstration Outside Presidential Palace

Muslim Brotherhood and other pro-democracy parties, groups and movements have issued a statement calling Egyptian people to join a mass demonstration and rally outside the Presidential Palace in support of the elected president and the new constitution today.

Wednesday, December 5,2012 14:49

Dr. Mahmoud Ghozlan, Muslim Brotherhood leader, said that the Muslim Brotherhood and popular forces and movements are calling people to demonstrate outside the Presidential Palace on Wednesday afternoon in order to support and defend the legitimacy of the elected President.

This follows Tuesday’s violent violations by protesters who thought they could shake the foundations of legitimacy or impose their own opinion by force, prompting Egyptian popular forces to show that they, the Egyptian people, did choose this President and gave him full legitimacy through free and fair elections, and that they are able to defend that legitimacy, endorse the new constitution and protect state institutions.

Egyptian group calls protest to counter Muslim Brotherhood
Published today 14:24

CAIRO (Reuters) -- An Egyptian leftist opposition group urged its supporters to head to the presidential palace on Wednesday in response to the Muslim Brotherhood's call for a protest there in support of President Mohamed Mursi, a spokeswoman said.

The Popular Current, led by ex-presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy, said its members would back other protesters who remained outside the palace overnight to demand that Mursi cancel a decree giving him sweeping powers and halt plans for a constitutional referendum on Dec. 15.
