I work at a jazz radio station; we got an email from a local jazz musician, who is touring with Chris Brubeck, that Dave Brubeck, whose 92nd birthday is tomorrow, has died.
What a pioneer, what a lion. He will be missed. RIP, Dave, and thanks for all you did for jazz.
Waiting for an official link before posting in LBN.

(149,636 posts)So many of his songs animated my coming of age......
Take Five, of course...
Blue Rondo a la Turk...
Many others whose names I no longer remember...
Safe passage, Dave.......
As long as we play your music, you will live.

(146,317 posts)1961. My introduction into 7/8 time. That and "Take Five" revolutionized the way I looked at music. Over time, I have played in odder time signatures than those, but that was my introduction.

I'm no authority but I think Take Five with it's characteristic 5/4 signature is perhaps the most chill song of all time:
1966 in Germany: Dave Brubeck - piano, Paul Desmond - alto sax, Eugene Wright - bass, Joe Morello - drums

Revolutionary records with Time Out, and Time Further Out.
And he kept playing all of his life.
The world is a poorer place without him.

(11,443 posts)It was the first jazz album I purchased, and over 45 years later I still listen to that recording on both 180 gram vinyl and on CD. Had to have it after hearing the Take Five cut on an AM radio station, but a couple of college buddies purchased it just because of the album cover.
It's one of the classics that has held up for over almost half a century like Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue.
