The Republican nominees schedule this month defies conventional campaign strategy, and draws a sharp contrast with Trumps schedule in August of 2016.
Something more is going on here. He is unhinged and becoming worse.
Don't get me wrong, I don't give a shit about his health but I just wish the press covered it half as much as they covered Joe.

On the other hand he has no strategy other than to lie and brag about imaginary events.

(405 posts)Energy level is down. Confused about numbers. Raging at his opponents and perceived enemies. Unable to keep a coherent thought. Talking to imaginary people (Hannibal). Just wants to watch TV and play occasional rounds of golf. Now seems primarily obsessed with his legacy (large crowds, etc).
Don Jr. and crew must have been able to motivate and medicate him enough to do yesterday's press conference. Assured him that he is still leading in the "best" polls, his fans were begging to hear him, and that his favorite reporters and hot women would attend. Then he was allowed to ramble until the meds started wearing off.
I think we will certainly observe his dementia progressing in the coming six weeks. Between the sentencing in NYC and the debate, the mental stress in the week leading up to them both might push him over the edge.
I can't help but wonder if the NY judge is going to sentence him to time in the big house? I know I know -- he's teflon. But at the end of the day, he has been found guilty by a jury, owes NY $400 Million, and hasn't expressed a single word of remorse. With all the craziness with him, maybe the judge will request a mental health assessment before final sentencing. We'd hope that he gets more than a slap on the wrist and probation -- but maybe permanent confinement to a mental institution is the best solution.
since Vice President Harris became the nominee, it has thrown tfg off course.

It would be amazing.

They should've dumped hum long ago.
Now that Joe Biden is out and the MSM and cable media outlets are no longer concentrating on his age, trump's weaknesses are now evident and glaringly obvious.
Too bad. So sad.
Something is definitely wrong for him to be taking weeks off at this time at this late date in the campaign. IMO something decisive and disastrous for them is going to decide the election...and it won't be positive for them.
Stock up on popcorn.
Metaphorical
(2,357 posts)Trump dropping out of his own volition is NOT going to happen. He controls too much of the organization at this point, and DeSatan (sorry, DeSantis) is not even well-liked in Florida, let alone outside of it.
As to campaigning, it has become obvious that he's not growing his base of supporters through the campaign rallies, and the assassination attempt spooked him more than he wants to admit. The Democratic Convention and Harris are going to lead the news cycle for the next three weeks regardless, and the media is getting a LOT of heat for Trump's disastrous "press conference".
Assuming that he's not trying to plan some kind of October Surprise (and I have no doubt that this IS in the works), I expect that he's going to campaign through the few proxies he still has left to him.

TSF knows that, if he doesnt win (either through winning the election or
other methods), hell likely wind up spending the rest of his life behind bars.
Its why I think he and his cult will become even more dangerous if/when the election is finally called for Harris.

(2,357 posts)Musk switched his focus to Great Britain awfully quickly. He may also be overextended at this point - still with more money than anyone should ever have, but all too much of it is either on paper or hasn't yet materialized (such as his Tesla compensation). Many very wealthy people are often far from liquid.

(35,736 posts)And from my personal experience following a violent attack, the longer he delays returning to the kind of scenario in which it happened - the harder it will be. I won't be at all surprised if he doesn't ever return to his traditional rally-style campaigning or if - when he does -it is in indoor arenas where entrants are heavily screened.

(60,851 posts)He is also mentally ill and has dementia.
And has other stressors as well.
It is all too much for him.
He cannot cope.
Ms. Toad
(35,736 posts)His mental status hasn't changed dramatically since the assassination attempt, nor have any of the other stressors.
Rallies, and his adoring fans, are like food and air for him - so for him to stop them it must be something new and extraordinary. An assassination attempt fits that bill.
Virtually no one is taking the assassination attempt very seriously. That is in large part because he is such a buffoon that it was easy to imagine it was all a false flag operation. And since his physical injury wasn't serious (and he hammed it up immediately - and for a week or so after), it was easy to ridicule. Rather than focusing on how dangerous the shooter actually was, DU (and others) have been dismissing it as no big deal - calling it his little boo-boo, for example.
But having a bullet (or something you believe is a bullet) come close enough that had you not turned your head, had the shooter not been interrupted moments before firing, etc. you wouldn't be here now is sobering in a way that is much more serious than anyone has been giving it credit for.

Fear tends to drive people to authoritarianism, not expanded democracy.
See what we got after 9/11: the Patriot Act, the FISA Amendments Act, et al
If there's one thing that Trump doesn't lie about, it's his desire to be an autocrat, and it wouldn't be the first time in history a scared populace turned to such a megalomaniac.
AZ8theist
(6,607 posts)But I was talking about the short term (< 3 months) possible effects of a terror attack.
People will "rally around the flag" in the short term we have until November.
Yes, there may be longer term policies put in place afterwards, but the short term effects are not always predictable.

(3,700 posts)Maybe it's on its last legs and he knows it. Musk will have to give him a plane now so he can do rallies.
Metaphorical
(2,357 posts)Flying private planes is very expensive, especially when they are a 757 like Trump's. Fuel costs around $7 a gallon for 100LL fuel, and a Boeing 757 holds about 11,000 gallons of fuel (at about 1000 gallons an hour), plus fueling service costs, so close to $80,000 a fill-up. Boseman's about 6 hours from Mar-a-lago, so there and back runs pretty much a full tank of gas, and if big backers are backing off, Trump may be paying out of pocket.
Of course, the whole thing about this trip is fishy - go to Montana, which isn't really even a competitive state at this point, then mysterious mechanical problems (which may be legitimate if he can't afford regular maintenance of that monster) which drops him off in Billings, where it's unlikely that there is a press presence. An ideal place for someone (perhaps Russian?) to meet with Trump with no camera coverage.
