Bernie Sanders Rips John Boehner for Calling for Cuts to Disabled Veterans’ Benefits

By: Jason Easley
December 5th, 2012

In an address at the National Press Club today, Sen. Bernie Sanders tore into John Boehner and his fellow House Republicans for suggested cutting disabled veterans’ benefits in order to reduce the deficit.

John Boehner’s deficit reduction proposal includes cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid with new tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. Boehner also called for a switch to the chained CPI, which would reduce annual cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security recipients, and for disabled veterans.

Sanders called Boehner’s proposal morally and economically unacceptable, “It is morally and economically unacceptable that anyone in Congress would propose more tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and large corporations while at the same time proposing significant cuts for disabled veterans,. This is not what the American people want and it is not what must happen.”

snip//

The chained CPI is a big change that some Democrats and most Republicans are trying sell as something minor. The reality is that disabled veterans would see their benefits cut by $1,300-$2,260 a year by the time they reach age 65. Republicans are trying to create more revenue by reducing the level of benefits for disabled veterans. If implemented, the chained CPI would push Americans who already in or teetering towards poverty deeper into economic distress.

snip//

It was shameful when Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would create millions of jobs for veterans then quickly fled town, and it is even more disgraceful that congressional Republicans would even consider dishonoring and impoverishing those who have sacrificed so much. I am sure that these brave individuals would do more if asked. But anyone with a conscience can’t ask them to do more, when the wealthy have done nothing.

Liberals, progressives, conservatives, Democrats, and Republicans across this country should join together to tell Republicans that the United States does not steal from its veterans to give to the rich. Bernie Sanders said it best. What Republicans are trying to do to our disabled veterans is morally wrong, and injustice can only prevail when people stay quiet and let it stand.

Don’t stay quiet.

They are so secure in knowing that their base doesn't even have an original thought in their heads that they don't even try to hide it anymore.

How many Democratic Senators and Representatives spoke up in a similar way?

Has Nancy impeachment-is-off-the-table Pelosi said anything?

This is how I now define them...
ODIOUS:

Main Entry:

contemptible

Part of Speech:

adjective

Definition:

despicable, shameful

Synonyms:

abhorrent, abject, abominable, bad, base, beggarly, cheap, crass, currish, degenerate, despisable, detestable, dirty, disgusting, hateful, heel, ignoble, ignominious, inferior, low, low-down, lowest, mean, odious, outcast, paltry, pitiable, pitiful, poor, sad, scummy, scurvy, shabby, sordid, sorry*, swinish, unworthy, vile, worthless, wretched

Notes:

contemptible means deserving contempt, while contemptuous means bestowing contempt; the first sense of contemptuous was 'despising law and order'

I think ODIOUS by definition really sums them up pretty clearly!

I guess they've been testing the waters and slowly figuring out that they can do anything whatsoever to their base and, as long as they can keep convincing them that our President is a Kenyan Muslim freedom-hating communist, they'll get away with this kind of heartlessness.

My fellow Comrade in at Arms;
I'll bet they would jump right on that like old Georgii and buck Shot Chaney led the troops in their heroic defense of truth, freedom. and the American way of life during the conflict (see I know one of them there republican catch word that don't upset the base like the word WAR would", in the Republic Of South Viet-Nam. Yep them brave souls told me "welcome back" and "we are proud of you" when I got back from my three exciting vacations in good old Mesopotamia . That means they would gladly take our place in our "Peace Keeping Operations" in the Stans.

P.S. All B.S. aside Thank You for your service in the war.

war is a drive by shooting or video game. There's a good reason for the VA and VA health care. No one leaves a war zone unchanged, and it's usually for the worse.
One of my VA counselors said the country was lucky we were getting high upon returning. Otherwise there would have been dead bodies all over the streets.
The best we can do for each other is to encourage returning vets to apply for their benefits and get the necessary help, and never give up, just keep badgering the government until it makes good on its promise Abraham Lincoln so eloquently explained in his second Inaugural Address.
"To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan"
I've made it my unofficial job.

"promote the general welfare" doctrine, one of the few unwilling for the old, poor, disabled, and disadvantaged to bear to bear the brunt of austerity, one of the few not willing for government to renege on its Social Security and Medicare obligations so der Mittens can pay only 13.9% in Federal income tax and many large, profitable corporation can pay no federal income tax: he is imo perhaps the first great living American hero and patriot to come along since the late Barbara Jordan. Godspeed, Senator.

in the House and Senate not uttering a peep about boner and his cuts does worry me being a vet myself. Those cuts mentioned by bonehead are unconscionable. These rethuhs must be stopped and sent to the dustbin history. No vet, disabled in two wars that went on too long and one of them based on a lie, deserves this type of treatment. This is rethug cold heartedness that cannot be tolerated. Those are some dastardly people on the right.

about why the Republicans keep using Greece when they point to spending? Did their crisis really have something to do with Goldman Sachs and J. P. Morgan cooking the books on loans to Greece which allowed the Greek Government to over spend? I'm just wondering what connection they had with the crisis in Greece?

This song is dedicated to fierce warrior known as Dick "Old Buckshot" Chaney who when called for service in Vietnam bravely turned his back and ran away, who later rose to the sublime degree of dungeon dwelling executioner, and with boiling blood and a failing heart courageously sent others children into an illegal war while wearing a tiny flag on his lapel:

HI Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to war we go, but not the sons of rich re-pub-li-cans.
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, we start the wars you know and blame the rats them commie dem-o-crats.
Oh Oh Hi Ho, Hi Ho, when the troops get back we will stab their backs Hi Ho, Hi Ho.

Id like to thank the Academy and The Grand Potentate of Deception His Majesty, King George II and all the little guys like little Donnie Rumsfeld, and my old buddy Paul "Wolf man" Wolfowitz for giving me the opportunity to go to foreign lands, meet innocent people, and kill them. I am so very grateful for having the opportunity to allow myself to believe your hype and buy off on you lies and W.M.D.'s or and that little joke you played on them kids at good ole Abu, ya know about them crazy jihadist being the ones that captured and raped Jessica, oh their getting over it while on the public dole in that plush resort at Leavenworth Kansas.

Well boys it's time for me to go take all of that medicine them good buddies at the V.A. give me to help me be so nice and friendly...oh King George Sir, I think I found your Pilot Suit on some dead guy near Mosul.

are such despicable people. Frankly I feel it is well past time to start bringing charges of sedition and treason against the House and Senate Republicans for all of the harm they have done to OUR Nation over the last 30+ years. The sons of bitches would rather see our populace in indentured servitude than walking the streets as free men and women.

for Social Security. It would separate Social Security from vets benefits. That could make it politically easier to cut SS COLAs in the future.
