We usually pull an elderly person in a nursing home and a child. They usually give you a name and age and what the person wants. Also where to bring the gift back to. We like doing it that way because we don't have to put our names on it. We always spend a little more to make them happy.

Despite the fact that some people may be offended by the religious nature of the parent organization, Angel Tree is a genuinely wonderful project. I know it intimately, having participated when I worked in D.C. metro area. We delivered presents to children of incarcerated parents, telling them that mom or dad had arranged for this to happen. I recall especially being in one very bad part of town, going into an apartment where a young boy was living with his grandmother. It was a disaster of a place for a young boy. We gave him the things his dad had wished for him. Books. His face glowed. I'm not sure he had owned any books.

Other experiences come to mind, too. All good. There's no sermonizing, no judging. Just compassion and love for the children who suffer.
