Chris showed the famous scream, and said more to come....what happened is what he says he'll explain.

I know what happened. Dean screamed to cheer up his broken-hearted supporters (like me).

He was ahead in Iowa when they went down. THen the debate - all but the lady candidate picked on Dean, not on each other, only on Dean. It was so obvious they were ganging up on him.

And, Mrs. Clinton went down to the caucuses and convinced a lot of them that Dean was not electable. Not reported on the networks, but shown on people interviewed at the time....

"Howard Dean contributed some fatal errors of his own, to be sure, but he also brought fresh air and new ideas, a crisp call to revitalize the Democratic Party and at least the outlines of deeper political and economic reforms. The reporters, as surrogate agents for Washington's insider sensibilities, blew him off. Dean's big mistake was in not recognizing, up front, that the media are very much part of the existing order and were bound to be hostile to his provocative kind of politics. To be heard, clearly and accurately, he would have had to find another channel.

For the record, reporters and editors deny that this occurred. Privately, they chortle over their accomplishment. At the Washington airport I ran into a bunch of them, including some old friends from long-ago campaigns, on their way to the next contest after Iowa. Only Paul Begala of CNN demurred. "I don't know what you're talking about," Begala said, blank-faced. Nobody here but us gunslingers." So, I remarked, you guys saved the Republic from the doctor. Yes, they assented with giggly pleasure, Dean was finished--though one newsmagazine correspondent confided the coverage would become more balanced once they went after Senator Kerry. The party establishment, limp as it is, was correct to target Dean with tribal vengeance. From their narrow perspective, he represented a political Antichrist. The unvarnished way he talked. The glint of unfamiliar, breakthrough ideas in his speeches. His lack of customary deference to party elders (and to the media's own cockeyed definition of reality). What the insiders loathed are the same qualities many of us found exhilarating."

Yep, nobody here but us gunslingers from Crossfire and Hardball and other formats.

I thought it was because they wanted HC to take the 2004 election and HD would/might have prevented that, so they preferred a Rep win...

I've just posed somethig about the Michigan 2008 primary election which was declared illegal by the DNC where all except HC & one other candidate took their names off the ballot because they were told they couldn't have the votes counted towards delegates at the convention. The HC crowd fought like hell to get the votes but folks like me who voted "uncommitted" were not happy about that.

It's eight years too late for the one-time Democratic presidential front-runner, but that manic scream Howard Dean screeched after losing January 2004 Iowa caucuses didn't happen the way TV showed it. In fact, it was drowned out by cheering Dean fans, according to an exhaustive new study of the much-mocked yell of "Yeaaah."

The journal Media, Culture & Society has determined that the sophisticated microphone Dean had in his fist was built to filter out surrounding noise for news crews filming the event, and by doing so unfairly broadcast his scream minus the building crowd chants the former Vermont governor felt compelled to yell over just to be heard.

Without the context of that crowd noise, said the journal, all TV news captured was Dean's rant.

"Through the medium of television, Dean's speech exhibited a man seemingly out of control," said the journal. "His voice and energy level rising higher and higher, he seemed to shift from intense to borderline manic, finally reaching the peak of a crescendo in what sounded like an inappropriately enthusiastic scream." And, the journal added, the result was media ridicule that killed his presidential chances.

8. So why is he bringing this up now? The issue with the mike was known at the time.

Is there some Washington intrigue going on, or has enough time simply passed that Tweety can admit he was an idiot?

12. I wonder if there's a plan afoot to clean up Dean's image for Dems

who were never aware of the damage he suffered from his own. That mike is old stuff, but they can't possibly tell the truth. Might get somebody else's supporters mad...

Seems the truth will make some free, but not everybody.

9. Scarborogh (sp?) was the first one to jump on the scream.

I've hated that big mouth ever since.
So unfair.
HD was just rallying the troops and he might have really had a chance but the big guns in the Dem party were gunning for him (Kennedy, Kerry.)
My husband and I were in Iowa working for HD that night - he was at the Dean headquarters - I couldn't believe it as the whole thing crumbled in an instant.

I was heartbroken at home. Immediately emailed a small donation to Dean to show support. I don't think I could have stood it to be there. But I'm glad you were because you are a witness to what a lot of us figured out just by looking...

10. He was great as head of the DNC too until Obama dumped him for Keane.

The 50 state strategy is lauded to this very day.

14. And they didn't even invite Governor Dean to the DNC's ceremony

for Keane.

Oh, I emailed Obama again a few hours ago and asked the White House to appoint Dean to some position. I do that pretty often.

Dean is the only thing that bothers me about the President. If not for that, I would find him almost flawless..

Let's hope Biden doesn't end up discarded on the pile. They started cracking a lot of jokes about him as soon as they took office, but Obama has stuck up for him in numerous ways and he's getting his stature back again.
