This is the now-famous video that was censored by YouTube. It shows Whole Foods employees LYING about the GMOs being sold by the store.
Fact: Whole Foods is a massive retailer for Monsanto's GM corn, which is found in all sorts of products on the shelves at Whole Foods. This is the same strain of genetically engineered corn that French researchers recently linked to massive cancer tumors in rats.
As of this writing, Whole Foods has offered ZERO support for Proposition 37 and has made NO effort to require GMO labeling for the products it sells.

(37,648 posts)None of the allegations are supported by any facts. For example, the speaker says that 30% of Whole Foods products contain GMOs. But then the video doesn't cite any authority for that statement.
I don't think much of Whole Foods, so I wouldn't be surprised if this were true.
But think about it: if you owned a "Martha's Deli" in Los Angeles, and someone posted a video on Youtube saying that 10% of the pork sausage that Martha's Deli's sells is actually cut with fatty burger beef, and that soup advertised as MSG free actually contains MSG, wouldn't you expect Youtube to at least require such harmful allegations to be backed by references? It would open the doors for anyone with a beef (pardon the pun) against a business to post a damaging video full of lies.
So I think it's a good thing that there are some rules to the videos being posted. A lot of damage can be done.

(16,854 posts)I'm no lawyer... but it's a crazy free-for-all there and that's why it's popular.
Even Wikipedia isn't 100% factual. It's crazy ass You Tube, not the NY Times. That hey banned this is troubling.

(55,981 posts)court system settle it via liable suits? Really? REALLY?
If WF notified them it was libelous (and there is a reasonable chance it is) and youtube left it up, they could be liable.
Youtube owns youtube. They get to decide what is posted there and what isn't.

Do you honestly not understand the difference between having the freedom of speech versus letting someone use your stuff to get their message out?
You do realize that people don't HAVE to use youtube, right?
Ever lent your car to someone? Did you expect them to treat it responsibly and not do a bunch of damage with it (causing your insurance rates to go up)? Or did you just say "Dude, do whatever you want"?

(55,981 posts)your own. If you dont like what NBC broadcasts, start your own network.
I believe that corporation exist at the pleasure of "WE The People." Apparently you disagree.

(535 posts)So you believe that, since youtube lets some people post things there, they have to let everyone post anything they want? Even if it subjects them to criminal or civil penalties?
And if not, you would rather see them totally gone.
Do I have that right?
Does that apply to Dem Underground as well? Should DU have to allow people to post real names/addresses, etc, and not hide any posts?

(55,981 posts)You have a point and I will concede. I guess I let my anti-corporatism chip on my shoulder get the best of me.

(535 posts)for actually winning an argument. This is certainly the first time its happened here on DU (for me) and probably my entire time on the Intertubes!
Seriously, though, kudos to you. It takes a big person to actually admit the other person has a good point. Most either futilely hang onto their losing argument or never respond.
Nice having the discussion with you.

(28,749 posts)I don't feel that this is false advertising.
Whole Foods along with Trader Joe's are by far much better than say Walmart/Target/and even my good old Wegmans when it comes to sourcing, employee benefits/wages, etc.
I also feel it's unfair to really label the employees propagating the lies (all the employees mentioned that they did carry GMO's) do you know how many SKU's are in that store? These people are coming in with direct questions about certain products and it's not really fair to ambush like that.
You are what you eat, read the label. If you can't pronounce it it's probably something you need not ingest (not in all cases).
On Edit: Thank-you for posting this video it was nice to watch. And on second edit some employees did not know/or were wrong... but some really tried and it's still ambushy.

but let's face it; they're not *that* much better.
i'd guess they have higher profit margins, actually, despite their better wages/benefits.

But the food? Feh.
Berlum
(7,044 posts)Their food is far cleaner than the average run-of-the-mill market. It's not all clean, but a much higher percentage than at your local purveyor of HFCS + GMO foodlike substances.
