(8,514 posts)None of the above. And, before I came to DU, I couldn't have cared less about these people's rights. Not that I fought against them; I just didn't care, one way or another. For the most part, it was because I didn't see that they had any less rights than any of the rest of us. It was here, on DU, that I found out that that wasn't true.
And, it was here that my heart was touched, and I realized that, although different from me, lgbt human beings are the same. They want to love and be loved; have a family, a home, children, jobs, a marriage, security. And, when we allow them to be deprived of those things, those basic rights, we pave the way for those rights to be taken from any of us, and all of us.
Congrats to the newly wedded. I am so happy for them. And, for the rest of us.

(161 posts)That has to be one of the nicest things I've ever heard anyone say.
Just the recognition that we need the same things that everyone needs.
And, that you care! That simple fact may seem trivial to some, but it isn't trivial at all.
Leastwise not to me! Not to some kid who may be at the end of his rope.
Just knowing that people can move from indifference to caring and concern
gives me real hope. I mean that truly. I found your words to be very touching.

(8,514 posts)It's hard to look at the pictures and not understand, isn't it? This isn't the first set of wedding pictures from lgbt nuptials I've looked at, and they ALWAYS touch my heart. We really lose a lot as people, and as a society, when we discriminate against those who are not like "normals." (No such thing as "normal," but you know what I mean.) Because life, in all forms, is so rich simply because of all of the differences between us. Such a pity that we don't celebrate them.

(36,392 posts)but my critical thinking skills and the experience of having lived through the 60's allowed me to quickly correlate the current anti-gay crusade with the campaign against rights for blacks 2 generations ago. conservatives always find targets for PC hatred to bring their faithful to the polls.

(34,582 posts)"32 years"- how can anyone in their right mind not consider this a married couple? I have been with my wife 20 years, married for 18 of that. Those ladies have me beat by 14. How can anyone in their right mind say it isn't a committed relationship?

(4,079 posts)I am at once incredibly happy that they can now express their love for each other as I have always been able to...
and incredibly angry that that right has been withheld from them for so long.
But on this joyful day I will choose to revel in the former and commit myself to working toward a world where the latter no longer exists for anyone in any state.
Thank you again.

(48,217 posts)A couple of Sundays ago, when we had our usual blessings for birthdays, anniversaries, and those about to travel, one of the gay couples who attend our church came forward. Although same-sex marriage is not legal in Minnesota, those two men had been together for forty years. I hope they can live long enough to have a state-recognized marriage here.

(15,741 posts)he did come around.
We still got to push him on a host of other issues too - like getting back to a 94% tax on the rich and increasing capital gains, etc.....
"Ive stated my opposition to this. I think its unnecessary," Obama told MTV. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage."
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2008/11/obama-on-mtv-i/
We've got to push him, and push harder than the R's are pushing in the other direction.
