Cairo rocked by mass protests against Mursi's draft constitution
Sameh from Egypts Revolutionary Socialists reports on the anti-Mursi demonstrations in Cairo and across the country
There are hundreds of thousands of people on the streets today, Friday. People are marching on the presidential palace right now, while the army is trying to close off all access.
They are protesting against President Mohamed Mursis plans for a new constitution that will give him exceptional powersincluding the ability to dissolve parliament and announce martial law. These demonstrations arent just happening in Cairothere are clashes in several other regions.
Its a very complex situation. And we have to be careful with the simplistic view that these protests are just about secular forces versus Islamists.
Even when things are articulated in that way, they can be more complicated. Many Salafists say they are fighting against the secular state and for sharia law. But they see Mubaraks regime as a secular one and see sharia as the only way that the poor will get justice and equality.
Also it is obvious that there are elements of the old regimethe feloul, or remnantswho are trying to use this mass movement. Some liberal leaders have unwisely made alliances with former Mubarak peopleand this is used by the Muslim Brotherhood in their propaganda. The Brotherhood says, Lookthese people want the old regime back, which isnt true of course.
The latest protests are being portrayed as being controlled by the non Islamist parties. But this movement is out of their control. They didnt want there to be a march on the presidential palacebut they couldnt stop it.
New layers of people are being radicalised by these events. There are thousands of poor Christian Copts on these demossome protesting for the first time.
There has clearly been a pact between Muslim Brotherhood and the military, since the new constitution gives the army massive powers. There will be no parliamentary oversight on the military budget. The army just needs to say we need this much and parliament is obliged to hand it over. Most importantly, the armys business interests continue to be unchecked.
Neoliberalism
And the constitution enshrines neoliberalism. In terms of workers rights it is terrible. You have rights to form a political party but not a trade union. Theres full protection for private property. Its anti-redistribution and anti-nationalisation.
As far as public services go the constitution is very limited. It says healthcare will be free for those who cant afford it. But how do people prove that? Effectively it means the government will not provide full healthcare for people.
So far workers have not taken part in the demonstrations in an organised fashion. There have been attempts to push for action. Trade unions have produced statements against the constitution. But such developments take time.
Mursi is pushing this through because he is under pressure. Egypt is in a severe economic crisis. Mursi wants to clamp down so that loans from the IMF and Europe can come through. Reserves are running out and there is huge pressure on the Egyptian pound.
The Islamists are isolated. They had a demonstration on Saturday of over 100,000they claimed six million. But many people were bussed in from the countryside. The support for the Brotherhood and the Salafists is strongest outside the cities, in rural areas and small towns.
There have been no clear official splits in the Brotherhood yet. What happens will depend on how events develop. But Mursi is in a difficult position. If he backs down he will be seen as a weak president and will give protesters more confidence. If he doesnt, the protests will escalate.
The pressure on him is enormous. What started as demands to go back on the constitutional amendment have become mass demands for the regimes downfall.
The Revolutionary Socialists are doing well. We are in the leadership of all the big demos, we are winning people and we help cleanse the demos of any feloul elements. We are producing new leaflets every day.
We say the constitution is pro-business and pro-army. People feel this is not what the revolution is all about. Thats why people are on the streets. The revolution is still on.

An American Coup in Egypt? http://nblo.gs/FFUez
Sorry I had to snip this.

What is happening in Egypt warrants historical contextualization. When Sadat first took over after Nasser in 1970, his chances of survival in power were nil. He had no political stature and no power base of his own. He began to build up his power in 1971 when he announced the existence of a wide leftist conspiracy by Nassers chief advisors (he called them marakiz al-qiwa centers of power). His case was based on secret tapings of phone conversations. It was never before revealed whether the US government supplied Sadats with the evidence in order to help him eliminate his Nasserist rivals. It was only a year later that Sadat ordered the Soviet advisers out of Egypt, probably as a payback to the US government. The rest of the history of Sadat and Mubarak is too well-known: the US government helped construct and supervise the repressive security state in Egypt, which would become a cornerstone of US-Israeli policies in the Middle East.
...
But the Muslim Brotherhood needed time to prove their loyalty and subservience to US security interest and orders. The US was watching closely and it was very clear to Arab watchers that the Ikhwan underwent a swift makeover. Gone were all the speeches about jihad with its grotesque anti-Semitic rhetoric and the standard Islamist references to the descendants of apes and monkeys, and in was a new insistence on the necessity of respect for the international treaties and obligations. Of course, the redundant references by the new Egyptian government to the respect for international treaties were in no way related to Egypts bilateral treaties with African and Asian countries. It became a euphemism or a code language of sorts for the new government of the Ikhwan: it was sent as a signal to the US that they are willing to preserve the same foreign policies of Mubarak-Sadat in return for support in power.
The Brotherhood sent emissaries to Washington, DC and held talks with prominent members of the Zionist establishment in the city. Senator John McCain (a man to the right of Ariel Sharon), became a sudden champion of the Ikhwan in the US and went regularly on Fox News to promote the notion of a moderate Muslim Brotherhood. The IMF (a mere tool of US foreign policy) quickly joined in and promised a generous loan in return for good behavior.
...
There is no evidence as of yet that the US was involved in Mursis coup, but there is clear evidence that the two governments have been working closely together. Various emissaries of Mursi were dispatched to Washington DC, and Mursi notified the US government of his decision before the decree was announced to the Egyptian public. It is not unlikely that the US has colluded with Mursi in order to reconstruct the repressive security state that has been so helpful to Israel over the decades. It is possible that the US will adjust its relationship in the region in order to incorporate the Ikhwan regimes into the established pro-US regional repressive system. The suspicion of a US role in the Mursi government is widely shared among Egyptians, and its explains why many protesters went to the US embassy to protest but were turned away by Mubarak-Mursis security goons.

(25,699 posts)Revolutions are not fast. It took ten years for a viable state to arise on the eastern shore of North America after the 1776 uprising. If you were expecting instant gratification, waiting for "democracy to kick in" like that Family Guy clip, well, either you have a very poor perspective of history, or you're judging these nations and people by a very different standard than the one you use for your own.
The Egyptians aren't afraid of their government anymore, and they'll keep doing this until they get a government they like... and for the record, no, that's not necessarily going to be a government you like.
