Some of those Duke types make a helluva more more money than any tow truck driver.

(44,580 posts)Even if they are "Duke types," I dare say they'd be smart enough to avoid the trestle if they did.
I stand by my story.

(556 posts)A lot of those trucks are rentals, and people often don't know how tall the vehicles are that they are driving.
Great footage, though, and especially great music choice!

(86,843 posts)I relate a story of a bridge around south Philly, I think it's a RR trestle on US13, sound about right? It looks almost like the one in the video! I've only been there twice and that was decades ago. I didn't go through and only touched the bridge as I was creeping really slowly and watching but I still tagged it and had "issues" afterward... and I had to get back to south Boston afterward. The trip home did more damage than the actual event since I had to pass through NYC interchanges to get there, and then there were some in CT before I got back. It wasn't pretty.

(1,009 posts)and there's usually a sign on the side of the vehicle saying what the height is. And lastly, the renter is responsible for any damage.

The old bridge was torn down and replaced.
Trucks were always hitting the bridge.

(146,338 posts)My wife and I were driving down the road leading to Terminal 1 at MSP airport. We were following a box truck. Suddenly the top of the truck struck a large swinging sign announcing low clearance ahead. The truck continued on without noticing that it had hit the sign. The sign fell on the roadway, not far from the front of our car. Fortunately, I had been keeping back from the truck and was obeying the 15mph speed limit, so I stopped before hitting the sign. After we continued, we spotted the truck, which had sheared its roof off at the point the sign was warning about. Many flashing lights were on the scene.
Failure to pay attention.

have a bridge like that at the end of my block. between drivers who don't know how to back up and sliced up trucks, it is quite an annoyance.

(38,453 posts)There are litterally hundreds of bridges like this.. .we call them, viaducts.. So many railroad yards and undercrossings. I think most local truck and bus drivers know, but every once in a while you see the remains of of some truck and new marks. and since we have so many crossings with trains, it is common for drivers to try to beat the train. You hear about it ever so often. And almost always, the signals are working, and the train has it it's horn..and still people try to beat the train.

(86,843 posts)Probably well after that, there were 1172 low underpasses in the City of Chicago not counting outlying areas. I used to drive a produce truck with 13'6" trailer and sometimes 13'8" lettuce trailer back then, getting to the produce market on Water St. was something only locals and regulars knew how to do without finding a low bridge on the way and having to reroute. And I had to go all the way to So. Philly to find one to hit... looked just like the one in the video. I stopped, watched other trucks go under it and crept under it and as soon as the trailer touched, that was it. Even though I was going three mph and stopped as soon as it touched-I was hanging out the window watching the top, it still dinged the roof bad enough to cause a lot of damage. They're kind of like egg shells.
My friends (some much older drivers) consoled me by telling me... "Well you know, there's two kinds of truck drivers... the ones that hit the bridges and the ones that're gonna."
Love the video.

(3,333 posts)Yes, I crack up every time I see one because I know what's coming.
I saw one get stuck under the Montose bridge. He was finally able to get out by letting most of the air out of his tires.
Of course I know the cops that were there ended up giving him a pricey ticket for his screwup, too.

Yeah, most of those drivers should know better but this seems ridiculously hazardous and worth the money to raise the bridge.

(82,383 posts)Maybe they think it will fit if it is 11' - maybe subtract a foot from the sign and say it clears only 10' to help prevent more of this!

(216 posts)The Bridge that eats trucks is on the lower end of College Ave near downtown Athens--I'm always amazed at the speed at which some of those trucks have to be going to completely wedge themselves under that thing.

(52,387 posts)there are fancy electronic truck height warning systems, but the simple solution is to have a bar at the right height a reasonable distance in front of the bridge. it's just a suspended big yellow tube, designed to not cause damage but just to make a big noise if it's hit. hopefully that wakes up the truck driver and they stop.
not fool-proof, of course, but much cheaper than lowering the roadbed.
you may have seen these in multi-story parking garages.

(17,201 posts)but there's a website dedicated to the bridge: http://11foot8.com/
As the proud owner of a not-so-new RV, one of the first things I did when I bought it was to take my little sticker-making machine and print out a bright red sticker that reads "Clearance: 11'8"" and paste it right on the dashboard.
Those damned roof air-conditioning units are EXPENSIVE.

(17,201 posts)The manufacturers' stuff tells you the base dimensions, but sometimes don't bother to tell you that the optional A/C will add nine inches or so.
Since that little sucker parked in the back of the apartment will probably be my primary residence in the next six months or so, it behooves me to keep track of these things. I don't need another skylight.
Capt.Rocky300
(1,005 posts)considered lowering the street? That was done last summer in a town near us. They couldn't raise the bridge due to grade considerations for the trains so they tore up the pavement and dug the road bed deeper. Had it done in about a week. Problem solved and the insurance companies are happy. Not that I give a damn if they are.
whistler162
(11,155 posts)one is fairly infamous. It was involved in the MegaBus fatal crash several years ago. There are major warnings on both sides of the bridge and at the beginning of both ends of the parkway that leads to the bridge. Now there are more warning systems in place. Which probably won't work any better.

(17,111 posts)it was about a 4 hour drive. My brother was driving the rental truck. We went over the best way to get out of the area with the man in charge of rentals. It was a circuitous route to get on the interstate.
We had used other sources to map out a route once we left the bigger highway. That was an adventure, but we knew there were many overpasses that we barely paid attention to when in cars. It was a longer route, but that beat the alternative.

What the video doesn't really get across is that the bridge kind of sneaks up on you.

(8,646 posts)Except it's a major bridge, and trucks get stuck on the entrance to the bridge, usually about once a month or so. Because it's a major bridge, and the steel beam to the entrance of the bridge is a major support for the structure, the bridge is always shut down for a day or so while engineers check on the safety of the bridge. I don't know why they don't put a steel beam across the road further back before the entrance so that trucks will run into THAT before they run into the bridge and possibly compromise the structure. Would save a lot of money.
