Special counsel Jack Smith has outlined new details of former President Donald Trump and his allies' sweeping and "increasingly desperate" efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, in a blockbuster court filing Wednesday aimed at defending Smith's prosecution of Trump following the Supreme Court's July immunity ruling.
Trump intentionally lied to the public, state election officials, and his own vice president in an effort to cling to power after losing the election, while privately describing some of the claims of election fraud as "crazy," prosecutors alleged in the 165-page filing.
"When the defendant lost the 2020 presidential election, he resorted to crimes to try to stay in office," the filing said. "With private co-conspirators, the defendant launched a series of increasingly desperate plans to overturn the legitimate election results in seven states that he had lost."

By the way, welcome to DU. It can be a tough neighborhood. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
So far, I have discovered that if you do anything other than shine sunshine up peoples butts, you get attacked as being a Trumper or some shit. Not a very welcoming environment. all I was doing was expressing the exhaustion I feel over the fact that nothing ever seems to stick to the son of a bitch. And I wonder how many of these people are actually doing anything to help Kamala win, Or are they just sitting on their butts on the internet? I phonebanked three hours this afternoon I wonder whether this guy did.
Sorry I dont mean to unload on you. Its just that this is like the second or third time that this has happened to me. Its pretty discouraging and doesnt make you want to come back

(329 posts)Ive been aware of this site since shortly after the horror of George W being installed. It was comforting to find a place to collectively share angst, even though I rarely posted then. (Old account that I eventually closed.). Then I came back in 2016, seeking a place to feel closer to the anguish we were all feeling. I finally established an account a couple of months ago I guess. It seems to me that this should be a place where when one should feel safe its discouraging to be greeted with suspicion over a benign expression of an emotion. I understand that were all suffering from PTSD in some form, but it sure feels shitty to be accused of being something I loathe. Especially when Im actually doing something to try to ensure Democrats win.
OK, enough. Maybe its been a long day.

(329 posts)I understand the tendency. Some people want a place that is only refuge. I get that. I want it sometimes too, and may want to just say yeah! I suppose some are just more threatened by anything that they see as penetrating their bubble or their comforting delusions.
Its an emotional framework that isnt confined only to Right Wing conspiracy and paranoia, it seems.
PS- living and working in Washington for more than 30 years has perhaps given me a less naive and more clear-eyed view of politics.

(8,524 posts)Plenty of longtime DUers have become cynical about the chances of Trump coming to justice.
This person has only been here a few months and doesn't have a high post count, but the posts indicate a committed Democrat. It's lousy of you to try to try to discredit a newish member rather than welcome them. If you are more optimistic about what will come of the DOJ filing, you can just say so.
Botany
(74,864 posts)But to me and my half baked pea brain it looked like the selling of a oft pushed
meme of why bother trying to get Trump so why bother and while you are at it
dont bother to vote too because it is all rigged. Very convenient to bring up the
hopelessness of trying to get Trump right after a huge of legal cancer is now on Trump.

in some cases in very tough areas for 20 years in Ohio*, I am supporting Harris/Walz, Kiley
Adolph, and Mary Peltola during this election cycle, I have been a star member of DU for years,
I am going this AM to pick up some Harris/Walz yard signs right now that I designed and paid for,
I have personally walked voters through right wingers so they could vote, I have supported
an old friend who is a justice on Ohios Supreme Court and was our Sec. of State, made phone calls
and knocked on doors, worked for ecological restoration for 30+ years, worked against gerrymandering
in Ohio, and supported progressive media too.

you'll see that she's obviously not a troll.
But more importantly, if you were concerned about pessimism depressing the vote for Democrats, you could have brought that up. This is a discussion board, and voicing your concerns--without attacking Betty Boom's motives--would have opened up an appropriate line of discussion.
DU will eventually die if new posters are continually chased out of here whenever they post something that longtime DUers disagree with. Of course, they should be chased out if they're knowingly posting misinformation or not supporting Democrats--but (a) that's not what happened here and (b) that's what the Alert button is for.
Betty Boom

(8,524 posts)And thank you for the work you're doing for the Harris/Walz campaign. I hope you'll stay despite the several times you've been attacked. It's a shame that it only takes one or two posters to make someone feel unwelcome or to turn what ought to be a supportive community into a minefield.
Ideally, DU is a discussion board, not an echo chamber. As long as we're not spreading misinformation or supporting opponents of our Democratic candidates, everyone should be able to post their opinions without being accused of being a troll.
Betty Boom
(329 posts)I doubt I will post much. There is a lot of fluff that seems to get outsized attention, while posts that intrigue me seem to sink quickly on the board. It hardly seems worth the effort to post something thought-provoking.
But its a good source for memes and cartoons, so I will likely continue to lurk. Have a great day.

(17,831 posts)is that you are liable for the actions of your co-conspirators? A mobster cant just tell a hitman to make sure that a witness never testifies, then claim that he is innocent because he did not commit the murder or tell the hitman specifically to murder the witness.

(17,831 posts)...that the email itself as attached to the filing. It also shows how Trump's co-conspirators understood Trump's words and directions. Trump's main defense is that he was merely using heated rhetoric, and that he was not actually intending that folks start an insurrection. I think Jack Smith wants to show that Trump fully understood that his followers would take his words literally and that this was the intended result given that Trump was fully aware of the events as they transpired and not only did he not stop them, but that he intended to continue to support such developments.
The irony hear is that the action of the Secret Service is disobeying his direction to take him to the Capitol is what is allowing Trump to claim some non-involvement given that he was not literally on the steps of the Capitol telling his supporters to hand Mike Pence.
