(17,774 posts)While some folks attack traditional journalistic outlets for the rise of the extreme right, a better argument that the rise of the racist right is due to the decline of traditional journalism, which has been replaced by social media, which operates to radicalize users by providing self-reinforcing recommendations that promote racism and sexism.
https://www.ucdavis.edu/curiosity/news/youtube-video-recommendations-lead-more-extremist-content-right-leaning-users-researchers
A multidisciplinary research team in communication and computer science at the University of California, Davis, performed a systematic audit of YouTubes video recommendations in 2021 and 2022. They tested how a persons ideological leaning might affect what videos YouTubes algorithms recommend to them. For right-leaning users, video recommendations are more likely to come from channels that share political extremism, conspiracy theories and otherwise problematic content. Recommendations for left-leaning users on YouTube were markedly fewer, researchers said.
YouTubes algorithm doesnt shield people from content from across the political spectrum, said Magdalena Wojcieszak, a professor of communication in the College of Letters and Science and a corresponding author of the study. However, it does recommend videos that mostly match a users ideology, and for right-leaning users those videos often come from channels that promote extremism, conspiracy theories and other types of problematic content.
The study, Auditing YouTubes recommendation system for ideologically congenial, extreme, and problematic recommendations, was published this month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cooper's later tweets in the thread were simply links to media stories, which do appear in the unrolled version as bare URLs or dressed-up links.

(25,839 posts)Wearing eye protection goggles and using a circular saw during a clean up session?
You know who would think that kind of behavior is beneath him. When the truth is he lacks compassion and would probably cut his own (or intentionally someone else's) hand off in an attempt.

(3,194 posts)problem. Disinformation, misinformation, and outright lies cause harm. So far, our allegiance to the 1st Amendment has us hamstrung to do anything to stop our enemies from tearing us apart. It's known to us that you don't have to have a superior military to take down a democracy, you only need to divide to conquer.
Ideas anyone? Are there limits that a democracy could construct to protect the democracy?

(509 posts)He set up a go fund me for NC ..wondering how much he will take from it knowing they are rich in lithium mining...North Carolina has the largest hard rock lithium deposit in the United States, and is becoming a leader in lithium production. Plus, Microsoft has committed to invest $1 billion in a four data center campus in Catawba County, North Carolina. So why is trump so involved? Figure it out $$$$$$,,,Know why elon musk and trump are such buddy buddy's now? Go figure...$$$$$
