Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCNN is really milking the stupid gaff from Biden.
They started the segment bashing Biden as a demented old man and then went on to say how the gaff is "a gift to republicans."
Apparently, clarifying that he was talking about the person who actually called Puerto Rico a floating Island of garbage and not Trump supporters seems to not matter.
Such Bullshit. This isn't "a gift to republicans."
No one is going to change their vote because of anything Biden said or didn't say.
Meanwhile, J.D. Vance, who is actually on the ticket November 5 said he is "sick and tired of everyone getting so offended over every little thing" and that he "is so over it." Fuck these evil people.

But the last time I really checked (last night), it was a mumbled mess and no one was sure that he actually said they were garbage. I need to check on the latest status of that.
It doesn't matter to me. I love him, they are garbage, he knows he shouldn't have said it, oopsie. Move on!

(7,701 posts)You can't make Biden's defense of Puerto Ricans a thing. There are not MAGATS who were going to vote for Harris/Walz that will change their mind based on what Biden said. There are not people who were offended by the Nazi rally that heard what Biden said and will change their mind to vote for trump.
trump has yet to disavow or apologize for the numerous hateful things said at his Nazi rally. trying to make this stick to Biden won't work. It won't stop them from trying though. It will be on a loop on RW media. It won't land the same to people outside of that bubble.

(23,059 posts)They get to have one whole fun day of "WHOOPEE BOTHSIDERISM!!!" now that they've got one single Biden gaffe to highlight versus the daily, if not hourly, trashing of America (and critical blocs of American swing voters) that Trump is engaging in.
I just saw Biden's comment in context. It's clear that the "garbage" he was describing was Trump and his supporters' "demonization of Latinos." Republicans are going to try and run with it anyway as "Basket of Deplorables Part II" and the media will give them a great assist, but I don't think it matters.
The reason Trump's Nazi rally gaffe (which was not even committed by Trump) was such a big deal is because swing voters that the Trump campaign is desperately trying to woo were directly insulted. Trump NEEDS those votes, and to have one of his minions piss off the hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans who live in swing states was just a completely boneheaded move.
But who did Biden insult (even if he insulted them directly, which he didn't)? Well, garbage people. Trump supporters. People who already weren't going to vote for Harris in a million years. So I wouldn't worry about this. This is not "Basket of Deplorables" all over again. My guess is that it will be a one day story that will not move the needle in any way.

(1,729 posts)Trump saying insane racist shit has been so common for so long that it's dog bites man. But, Biden hasn't been in the news much lately and this story of Dump's side ju-jitso-ing it into a win feels more man bites dog to them. It plays more to the soap opera drama that they want to drive viewership.
If you had the painful job of listening to all the insults Donald Trump spews there would surely be thousands of insults directed at Harris supporters to match Biden's one comment.

1. "Biden is demented and can't put a coherent sentence together!"
2. "Oh, my God! Biden called us garbage! He knew exactly what he was saying. We are so offended."
3. J.D. Vance referring to Puerto Rico being called a "Floating Island of garbage.": "I am so sick and tired of people being offended by every little thing. I am so over it!"
Republicans are good at faux outrage. It's just more bullshit.

(1,866 posts)Last night when I first heard of Biden's comments I was worried because I knew what the media would do--constant 7x24 coverage of Biden's comments and nothing else.
However, I'm not seeing this gain much traction on other social media outlets, despite CNN's desperate attempts to make it so. I think everyone is outrage fatigued.
If it were Biden running for President the media could flame this into a bigger deal but Kamala is the candidate, not Biden. Also, Biden hasn't been seen on the campaign trail with Kamala all that much, so the ties between her and Biden aren't as closely tied as, say, Kamala and Obama.
I think this will fizzle, I hope I'm right.

Those poor widdle billionaires just don't have enough money so they need another tax cut! This is why Koch, Musk, Thiel, Leo and 60 other dirtbag billionaire PARASITES have propped up Trump, because he wouldn't even be IN THIS if it wasn't for these traitorous pieces of garbage.
They ARE garbage and Trump supporters are also garbage, if they subscribe to the statements made in the Nazi-MAGA rally at Madison Square Garden.

(301 posts)Trump supports have seen and heard the Trump racism and hate and violent rhetoric for way too long - they know him. They know what he stands for (or doesn't). They know what kind of person he is.
If they still support him, then in my opinion (which doesn't rock the country or civlization) THEY ARE GARBAGE.

When there is a controversy over a "gaffe" or a scandal, just shut up about it.
Don't make excuses, don't try to explain.
Just shut up.
Within a short time, the media will move on to the next story.
Don't give them a "peg" to keep the story alive. The more you talk about it, the more coverage it will get. Keep quiet, and with no new developments the story will sink beneath the waves. It is a surprisingly effective strategy.
Example: It was revealed recently that Trump accepted 10 million dollars from the government of Egypt. Nobody from Team Trump would comment on the story. Now that story has disappeared.

(16,920 posts)Harris' Harrisburg rally. They had a presser with Council of Econ Advisers, Jared Bernstein on discussing the latest economic data releases. Since econ was my major, I found it interesting and informative. Bernstein gave interesting informative answers to reporters' questions. A lot of stuff was a bit in the weeds, but I find that enlightening. When it was over, CSAPN switched to the WH daily brief and it was all about Biden's inarticulate statement. I turned it off, but I'd bet there was not one question about the details of any policy or pending legislation or anything else of interest to those of us outside the DC bubble.

(1,866 posts)I posted about this last night but my post was deleted for breaking the rules of "spreading right-wing talking points".
I guess I should have worded my post differently, but my concern (which turned out to be true) is the media would run with this 7x24 and talk about almost nothing else, which is exactly what they are doing.
That said, as worried as I was last night (which is why I posted: I was wondering how Democrats would fight back), I feel like the comment isn't getting the "legs" the media had hoped for.
Regardless, it is so frustrating to see the blatant double standard by the media.
The Lincoln Project found an old clip of Trump calling those who surrounded Kamala as "scum" and "absolute garbage". Media doesn't cover any of this. It's just "Trump being Trump".
