(164,546 posts)who are residents of a state on the mainland, between the island and the states where they live. There are literally commuter flights to San Juan set up for that and they are usually going to visit/stay with relatives.
They also have their own election going on too right now, but this is sending a message to the mainland residents to make sure to handle the "diss" (disrespect) of their culture by voting for Harris.

Now can we get Puerto Rico statehood?

(15,318 posts)And yeah, Puerto Rico needs to be a state. So does DC. That would solve our perennial Senate problem.

(17,798 posts)Just like any other resident living out of the country.
There are a lot of reasons people maintain stateside addresses. No idea of numbers though.

(69,124 posts)So Hawaii is considered a state, and Puerto Rico isn't? But as you said, if they have stateside addressees they can?
getagrip_already
(17,798 posts)Puerto rico is not a state and its citizens can not vote for national office, nor do they have representation in the house or senate (they do have a nonvoting rep in the house. More of an observer than a rep).
They are cirizens however, so if they establish residence in a us state, they have the right to vote in that state just like any other citizen resident.
There are 1.2 million PR citizens resident in FL alone. There are i think closer to 3 million in ny.

(69,124 posts)There are many Americans who live abroad who will be voting. The world is watching, let's make everyone breathe a sigh of relief on Tuesday or Wednesday.

(14,890 posts)For Puerto Rico to become a state, a second territory would like have to be admitted. This would be to keep the number of senators at an even number. Or, another choice would be to remove one of the existing states to keep the balance. In this scenario, Mississippi comes to mind as a good choice.
getagrip_already
(17,798 posts)There is no requirement there be an evrn number of states. We actually had 49 states until hawaii came on board.
But, there is also dc waiting patiently. They are bigger than a few states

BUT --- if you promise not to tell anyone...... Harris did win the election, along with a HUGE Blue Wave.

(25,355 posts)As has already been pointed out, you were speaking from19th century rules. There is no requirement for an even number of states admitted to the Union.
But, since every state gets 2 Senators, the total number of Senators will always be an even number.

(5,194 posts)So it wouldn't be breaking some foundational principle. But, to make everybody happy, we could always allow DC to have representation in the Senate!

(669 posts)PR is an unincorporated territory whose citizens were granted citizenship by Congress in 1917 (not by the Constitution). PR residents don't have full Constitutional rights, which is, IMHO, atrocious.

(5,194 posts)He could let Puerto Ricans use his Florida address to establish residency, so the whole island could vote in the next election! Would it be that simple?
getagrip_already
(17,798 posts)That would be illegal. But if someone could somehow provide legal residency, for free, to pr citizens, then sure.
But they would have to meet all of the residency requirements, which usually include being physically present in the state for a set smount of time first. Once you establish residency, all you would probably need is a mailing address, but im not an attorney and this isnt legal advice.

And yes Latinos will come to the defense of their Puerto Rican brothers & sisters as they, and we all, should.
