Donald Trump is a lame duck president.

There is a reason why there’s only been one president to serve non-consecutive terms before Trump. Trump is the only person to try it since Grover Cleveland and that’s because he will come in as a lame duck. The president’s party always loses seats at the midterms and 2026 will be no exception. Trump has less than two years to get any kind of agenda passed and with the very slimmest of margins in the House at best.
But the reason ousted one term Presidents don’t try again is because of the two term limit. That wasn’t in place for Cleveland; he could have run for a third term so he was not a de facto lame duck. Trump should have backed someone who would have carried out his agenda, but his ego wouldn’t allow it. In the second half of his term, Republicans in Congress are going to be too busy jockeying for advantage in the 2028 presidential race or to save their seats to get much done. Democrats just have to create obstructions for the worst of his impulses until 2026. As someone on MSNBC pointed out tonight, smart presidents nominate people who will easily be confirmed because it saves a lot of time. Gaetz’ nomination is going to be a circus and likely so will Gabbard’s and Hegseth’s because they are clearly unqualified.

The economy wasn’t that bad between the end of Ronnie’s second term and the first part of Daddy Bush’s term in office. Of course that was when Club Pachyderm still had some competent people who actually believed in governing. And that was over thirty five years ago.

And before you all pitch a fit, I didn’t say here-and-now, I said thirty five years ago. THIRTY FIVE YEARS AGO. Way back when, not today. Half a lifetime ago. Ronald Reagan is dead and gone. George HW Bush is dead and gone.

That style of Republican governing is out of fashion. Dead. Gone. Over. And after watching the current incarnation of the Republican Party, it’s NEVER coming back, and only grifters, liars, and fools say it will and only chumps, suckers, and the corporate news media believe them.

The one thing that may keep Trump in office the entire term is that he probably has dirt on plenty of people. That's how he got Jerry Falwell Jr to endorse him in 2016 instead of Ted Cruz. Trump knew about JFJr liking to watch his wife have sex with other men and Michael Cohen helped to get back some "compromising" photos of Falwell's wife.

Out of the actual text:

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
