http://www.politicususa.com/oops-michigan-republicans-passed-work-law-unimplementable.html"Did Michigan Republicans even read the ALEC-Koch Right-to-Work legislation they just passed?
It doesnt appear likely. Why? Because the law may not be able to be implemented as intended.
Just as the Wisconsin law violated their state constitution, so it appears the Michigan law does the same, albeit for different reasons. In addition to the violation of the state constitution, just as in Wisconsin, we also have a lawsuit filed over the violation of the Michigan Open Meetings law. But to the constitutional issue
Michigan Senate Democrats report, The Michigan Constitution gives clear authority to the Civil Service Commission over conditions of employment for the states workforce. Experts have suggested today only a vote of the Civil Service Commission could enact Right to Work policies for state workers.
Oopsie.
This is the sort of thing that happens when a national organization is writing your legislation for you. But one assumes that the big boys at ALEC did not count on the uber laziness of the Republicans. Surely they were meant to fine tune the bill to suit their state. But then, when you shove a bill through in a lameduck session and dont hold it open for debate, these things tend to happen."

I hope the Democrats push back on this, HARD. I'm also going to be getting up early on Saturday along with (I hope) a few thousand of my union friends to give Rick The Dictator our regards. Here's a e-mail from the MSU AFL-CIO President:
---------
On Tuesday, Governor Snyder chose to ignore the voices of the citizens of Michigan, and signed the Right to Work for less bill. Please join us Saturday to let him know that we will not be going away anytime soon.
This Saturday, December 15, were going to make it impossible for Snyder to ignore us. We will be gathering at the Kellogg Center Auditorium on Michigan State Universitys campus at 8:00 a.m., and then we will head over to the Breslin Center where the Governor will be receiving an honorary degree. We will be honoring graduating students, and making sure that the Governor knows that we are there. We need to show up in mass and let him know that there is nothing honorable about silencing the voices of workers and unraveling the middle class.
Will you join us and let Gov. Snyder know that we will not be silent? RSVP by clicking here.
In Solidarity,
Karla Swift, President
Michigan State AFL-CIO

(2,049 posts)1. what's stopping them
from fixing it, since we're warning them that it needs fixing? Shouldn't we have waited at least until January when there will be a few more Dems? They can just fix it now and ram it through again.

(34,451 posts)2. There's no "fixing" it if the Civil Service Commission piece is in the MI Constitution.
The MI legislature doesn't have the ability or votes to change the Constitution. There's also that pesky Open Meetings Act thing.
