American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer had something heinous to say about the tragic school shooting in Connecticut today. He said that God allowed the shooting to happen because prayer, the Bible, and the Ten Commandments are not taught in public schools and "God is a gentleman" who does not go where he is not wanted, Right Wing Watch reports:

Fischer said that God could have protected the victims of this massacre, but didn't because "God is not going to go where he is not wanted" and so if school administrators really want to protect students, they will start every school day with prayer.

I remember running one workshop at a small SF con, wherein we worked a super cheap, ghetto-tech, sustainable Moonbase.

$200K for 12 people, without the needed 12 manyears of stored food, and transportation. The major difference between aircraft construction and a rocket engine are the pressurization, some instruments, and fuel. (In a pinch, you COULD go with a Pulse-Detonation Engine. That'll need good shock absorbers, or you'll bruise your crew. PDE's get sick amounts of bang to the buck lift.)

You could possibly build up a low tech lifter for around the price of a few new Cessna 172's. (Think it through... if you do the welding yourself, that cuts out the labor. the engine in question would be built from fuel injectors and piston style airlines, with spark plugs for the ignition system. Call it $600K

That's $800K for 12 people. That's (with a little cushioning) $80K for each person. That means saving (and working) fort 10 years each. Not chump change, but far from the exclusive elite rank.

After the third ship would go up, the major capital investments are done, and the running costs would be the $20K per person to Mars. (After you have a strong enough industrial base, you could bring that to the cost of the incoming stored food - and even that could be made on Mars.)

Trips to Mars mean a year or so one way. A trip to L-5 is two days, 3 tops. Ditto to the Moon, where the materials for such a colony would be mined.

You might be able to "siphon" the gases of the extreme upper atmosphere...

You could sell the gases to the Earth cities... (that, and you could grab up of the the CFCs, thereby helping the world.)

Time to LEO, assuming a net 1 G acceleration, is about 13 minutes.

On the other hand, any technological civilization can easily create weapons from local materials. (A laser cutter, repurposed for travel, makes a nifty weapon, so does a shard of hard point ceramic...)

The things that ought to counteract it are:
1.) a group need to escape the violence below
2.) a perceived need to work together, in a harsh environment, amid self selected luxury
3.) self selection of groups for reasoned activities as a habit pattern
