New Jersey residents and lawmakers are pushing for more information about the mysterious drone sightings, including some near military installations.
A federal official said Thursday that the FBI is the lead agency investigating along with the New Jersey state police. Local law enforcement are also investigating.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said during a call-in program on Wednesday night that he would be bringing up the issue with the White House on Thursday but assured constituents that the drones as of now don't appear to pose a safety threat.
"Based on everything we know," Murphy said, "there is no public safety risk we're aware of. On the other hand, is it frustrating to not have more answers on this? Is it frustrating to not have a source for these things? Yes."

(4,480 posts)No military bases as far as I know, and I live much less than a mile from the border.
I'm not too happy about this. Today we got an alert to expect helicopter presence above.

PORTLAND, Ore. At least four commercial pilots encountered mysterious lights zipping through the skies above Oregon this past weekend.
One pilot flying an air ambulance reported a bright light streaking toward his Life Flight plane, with it suddenly reversing back toward the Pacific Ocean.
Red in color moving at extreme speeds. I dont even know how to describe how fast it was moving, the pilot told air traffic control.

All this has the unpleasant aroma of UFO hysteria.

(16,381 posts)Crystal clear. Theres no question these sightings are real, the question is whos behind it? Could be private citizens, a company, our military or someone elses military. I think aliens are very low on the likelihood totem pole.

(5,964 posts)Looks more to me like ground level lasers reflecting off clouds rather than flying objects or, as is often the case with these types of sightings, some other sort of optical phenomena.
Do you have a cite to better imagining?

(22,015 posts)My hope is that the drones are carrying ground-penetrating radar, looking for an "incriminating" trove (does the phrase "classified documents" strike a familiar note?) and what if secret hardware or ..... bodies? weapons? Find it now or find it never. JUST MY SUSPICION
I DO NOT think it's the work of the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster) though YMMV (Your macaroni may vary)

I doubt it's enemies/aliens because fighter jets and artillery would have smacked them down immediately.

(5,919 posts)everybody gets unusually mum all the while assuring the public that the "threat" is harmless. How does the gov't. know that it's harmless? My money's on the gov't knowing what it is. And it may belong to the gov't.

(1,631 posts)but someone alerted on one of posts, got it removed, so I can't reply to my own damn thread. It's full of videos and good info. Why is the hell would anyone alert on something that's all over the news, every day? There's been a congressional hearing on it, a Pentagon meeting, and a meeting with 500 mayors.

(2,357 posts)When I lived in SoCal many years ago, stations would scramble the helicopter s when there was a police pursuit on the freeways, or after a minor earthquake just in case they could get video of a crack in pavement somewhere near the epicenter.
Surprising to me that nobody diverts the Channel 28 Action News TraffiCopter (c) from covering the backup on l-76 to get Breaking News! Exclusive Footage! of a suspicious drone.
Or maybe news and helicopters aren't a thing in NJ
