None of This Is Going to End Well
March 11, 2025 at 4:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Bret Stephens: “It used to be common knowledge — not just among policymakers and economists but also high school students with a grasp of history — that tariffs are a terrible idea. The phrase ‘beggar thy neighbor’ meant something to regular people, as did the names of Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis Hawley. Americans broadly understood how much their 1930 tariff, along with other protectionist and isolationist measures, did to turn a global economic crisis into another world war. Thirteen successive presidents all but vowed never to repeat those mistakes.”

“Until Donald Trump. Until him, no U.S. president has been so ignorant of the lessons of history. Until him, no U.S. president has been so incompetent in putting his own ideas into practice.”

While it's generally not wise to interrupt an enemy who is digging his own grave an exception needs to be made for enemies whose self-destructive acts imperil the general population. Not just MAGA folks are going to suffer.

He and his fellow douchebag scribes from the NY Times did nothing but trash Harris and Biden during the campaign, while cutting trump a mile of slack. Same for the rest of the mainstream media.

And now he wants to tell us how awful trump is? Fuck that shit.

Smoot-Hawley was the name of a bill that passed both houses of Congress and was signed by Hoover. This time Congress has not been involved. It is a dictatorial decision by one man, the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. No checks and balances.

Lets start by admitting that all of his "ideas" were bad to begin with, and they were LIES, anyone who thinks he was serious or truthful about anything has not been paying attention.

Its a mistake to think they are incompetent. I have posted about this many, many times.

We think these people are incompetent because everything they do destroys, everything they do is counter to what must be done in order to help the country become better, to assure that those of us who needed the most are protected, etc., etc.

But these thugs ARE NOT INCOMPETENT, that is their goal, to create chaos, to destroy, to increase the anxiety of the people they are supposed to represent, its all by design, their high competence is being evil, and they are very good at that. We make the mistake to think they are incompetent and they are going to fall on their own swords, but it doesn't happen that way, we the people, and our representatives have to fight hard to get them out of office because once they cement their place in power, it is very difficult to bring them down, and as I have said before which is my biggest fear in all of this, if the military is an accomplice to these thugs that will make it almost impossible to bring them down, and there will be bloodshed if and when the people decide to come out to protest.

Just watch countries like Russia, Venezuela, and the many countries that have dictatorial regimes. This has to end this year, four years of this destruction are very hard to recover from. One thing is the economic destruction that G. W. Bush left behind, that one took close to eight years to fix, another is the massive destruction trump/musk are doing, and have done in one month, this is really insane.

But be convinced, THEY ARE NOT INCOMPETENT, and they are being led by Putin, he has been there, he knows what to do.

Well written.
I just happen to disagree with the premise.
Being convinced of one's own plans to succeed by causing chaos, when the elements of the plan are doomed to failure, doesn't dissuade me applying from the incompetence tag.
