Unless you define “barely squeaking in by the hair of my chimney-chin-chin” as a landslide victory. And he probably does want to change the narrative. That slim win doesn’t suggest an all-powerful ruler by acclamation or even by a resounding majority of the vote. He just barely slithered his way back in.

I think we have reason to believe the floor is 32-35%.
There are probably 1 in 3 supporters who will never defect & will approve of everything he does.
So 42 over 35 is pretty darned poor.

And compare them to where they were as of the inauguration...

Reuters/IPSOS - Trump's net favorability has dropped 14 points
Quinnipiac - Trump's net favorability has dropped 13 points
CNN did not conduct a poll any time near the inauguration.

Among other polls

TIPP Insights dropped 10 points between 1/31 & 3/6
Gallup dropped 5 points between 1/27 & 2/16 (I expect they will have an updated poll out soon)

Recent happenings concerning the tariffs and especially the stock market are likely to hurt Trump even further.

...are conversely apparently supported by Americans by wide margins.

This is the second poll with numbers like this in a week.

Ian Sams @IanSams
New CNN poll:

56% disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, “worse than at any point during his first term in office”

61% disapprove of his tariffs

His overall net approval rating is 9 pts underwater (45-54%) - down 4 pts just since CNN’s Feb poll

New CNN poll: Americans are negative on Trump’s handling of economy

Americans are not impressed with President Donald Trump’s stewardship of the economy, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, putting him underwater on the nation’s top issue even as he sees ratings among the best of his presidential career on other key priorities.

As markets slide and investors worry in response to Trump’s trade policies, a 56% majority of the public disapproves of his handling of the economy, worse than at any point during his first term in office. By contrast, the 51% who now say they approve of his work on immigration – headlined by stricter enforcement efforts – is 7 points higher than at any point during his first term.

Trump’s overall job approval rating currently stands at 45%, with 54% disapproving, in line with the numbers he saw in March 2017 and matching his highest ratings for his first term in office. Overall, 35% of Americans say things in the country are going well, a rise from 29% in January, reflecting a surge in positive sentiment within the GOP. His ratings remain highly polarized, with Republicans roughly 10 times as likely as Democrats to approve of his job performance.

Just 35% of Americans express a positive view of Musk, with 53% rating him negatively and 11% offering no opinion – making him both better known and more substantially unpopular than Vice President JD Vance (whom 33% of Americans rate favorably and 44% unfavorably, with 23% having no opinion.) Roughly 6 in 10 Americans say that Musk has neither the right experience nor the right judgment to make changes to the way the government works. There is uneasiness about Musk even among some of the president’s supporters: 28% of those who see Trump’s changes to the government as necessary doubt the tech billionaire has the judgment to carry them out.

...that's why we do more than just post cynical takes here.

We make an effort to inform more people on the platform we have available to us.

Hell, I just saw a couple of polls a few weeks ago touting Trump's strength with youth and black voters, with folks here just casting out all sorts of aspersions behind those deliberately skewed results at not only the party, but youth and black Americans.

Maybe folks here can use some reliable polling info, corroborated polling info, about the state of national opinion. And possibly folks here can use these in their discussions and debates against those insisting that these are popular actions Trump and republicans are taking.

My elder brother loves Trump - because if it always about the money. He really doesn’t have any empathy for anyone (except his kids) as long as he perceives there is something in it for him. I once told him that there were a number of German Jews that supported Hitler and they ended up in the Camps.

A long-time friend and I are working on his younger brother (70 years old) who loves the elimination of waste and fraud. He’s in Tennessee (what can I say), and after about an hour we shared with him that we loved him and why would he take the word from MAGA folks/Donald Trump over the two of us that have been with him all life. Been over six hours since we heard from him.
I suspect with Donald, it is that false masculinity that he projects on TV whereas my friend & brother would call him a punk if they had a chance to meet him.

...but this group of potential voters has been misrepresented maligned by pollsters in political debates for the decades since we achieved federal protection and defense of our right to vote.

Fact Check: Did Donald Trump Win 'Almost 40%' Of Black Votes?

Trump's claim that "almost 40 percent" of Black Americans who voted did so for him is not supported by polling and research data. No Republican candidate has achieved that level of support among Black voters since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956.

Polling by the Associated Press', AP VoteCast, which surveyed 120,000 voters nationwide, showed that 16 percent of Black voters picked Trump in 2024. It did represent the largest share of votes from Black for a Republican presidential hopeful since Gerald Ford in 1976.

Trump made particular gains among certain groups of Black voters; AP VoteCast's results show that he was backed by 25 percent of Black men. AP also reported that he roughly doubled his support from 2020 in Black men under the age of 45, with around 3 in 10 voting for him.

Adam Schiff: My Vote on the GOP spending bill. -You definitely want to read this.

https://schiffnotes.substack.com/p/my-vote-on-the-gop-spending-bill?

I'm a hard NO on the Republican spending bill. On cloture. On all of it. When a wannabe dictator is trying to seize power, it must not be given to him. Not without a fight.
Sen. Adam Schiff
Mar 13, 2025

Tomorrow, the U.S. Senate will have a very significant vote on a CR, a six-month CR, that is a six-month continuing resolution. I will be a hard no.

I hope this CR is defeated. I fear that it may not be, and I want to tell you why I'm voting no and why this needs to be defeated.

First of all, this is not a bill that would simply continue the funding levels of the government for the next half a year. This is a power giveaway to an executive already drunk with power.

This would embolden the president to continue tearing down government services, closing Social Security offices, illegally withholding funds, illegally seizing more and more authority from the U.S. Congress.

But worst of all, in my view, is we would be giving it to him.

It is one thing for those who aspire to dictatorship to take power. It is another to knowingly give it to him. I will not do that.

One thing is certain, if we pass this continuing resolution for the next half year, we will own what the president does. I am not willing to take ownership of that. I'm not willing to continue to see Donald Trump, Elon Musk ,and their minions continue to arrogate to themselves the power to fire anyone in the federal government.

They want the power to fund or defund anything in the federal government. The power to lay off veterans, to close Social Security offices, to cut health care, to cut Medicaid, to go after Social Security.

I am not going to take any vote to empower them to do that for one day, one month, one year. I'm just not going to do it.

Now, many argue that, well, wouldn't a shutdown of the government be worse?

If the government shuts down, let's be clear, they control everything. They control the House, they control the Senate, they control the White House, they control the Supreme Court.

If they shut down the government, it is on them. That is their decision.

If we give them power for the next six months to do whatever they choose, that is our decision. I am not going to make that decision.

Now, I don't know what happens if they shut down the government. And some argue, and I understand their concern, “Well, wouldn't they have more power to do more wreckage, more damage if the government shuts down.” The answer is, we simply don't know.

They're violating the law now. They may violate the law then. But I would trade the uncertainty of knowing what they would do if they shut down the government for the certainty that we have of knowing what they will do if we give them more power over the next six months.

So, for me personally, this is not a hard decision.

I am a hard no.

I am desperately worried about the direction of this country. We are seeing an executive run away with authority he does not have, merely because he claims to have it, merely because our courts have often acted too slowly to stop him.

And now, if we go along with this because we are willfully and willingly ceding him that additional power.

I will not go there.

I'm voting no. I urge all of my colleagues:

Vote no.

The consequence of their fear, ignorance, and stupidity, the voters voted for Trump for one reason only – he’d be ‘good’ on the economy, however ignorant and wrongheaded.

The voters don’t want Trump to abandon democratic allies, wage trade wars, or destroy the government.

Its especially notable that he's even underwater on immigration issues at this point.

• immigration issues: 46 percent approve, 49 percent disapprove
• foreign policy: 42 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove
• the military: 41 percent approve, 48 percent disapprove
• the economy: 41 percent approve, 54 percent disapprove
• the federal workforce: 40 percent approve, 55 percent disapprove
• the Russia – Ukraine war: 38 percent approve, 55 percent disapprove
• the Israel – Hamas conflict: 37 percent approve, 49 percent disapprove
• trade with Mexico: 37 percent approve, 56 percent disapprove
• trade with Canada: 36 percent approve, 58 percent disapprove

As for the Measles Question, the response tells you how successful the anti-vax propaganda machine has been. While 57% (vs 35%) of respondents think UNVACCINATED children should not be allowed to attend schools or childcare facilities, 10 years ago that spread was 70% to 23%.
