HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was meeting last week with representatives from a teachers union in his home state when things quickly devolved.
Before long, Fetterman began repeating himself, shouting and questioning why everybody is mad at me, why does everyone hate me, what did I ever do and slamming his hands on a desk, according to one person who was briefed on what occurred.
As the meeting deteriorated, a staff member moved to end it and ushered the visitors into the hallway, where she broke down crying. The staffer was comforted by the teachers who were themselves rattled by Fettermans behavior, according to a second person who was briefed separately on the meeting.
The interaction at Fettermans Washington office, described to The Associated Press by the two people who spoke about it on the condition of anonymity, came the day before New York Magazine published a story in which former staff and political advisers to Fetterman aired concerns about the senators mental health.

(350 posts)But as precarious as the situation is in my state of PA, we have got to force the nutcase out. Governor Shapiro could appoint a far more capable person. Fetterman will end up turning on us like Manchin or Sinema, and he has clear mental illness. They could run any Republican and beat him in the next election. I dont know of anyone with a good opinion of him.

(3,315 posts)...Fetterman has done some things recently that make me question his mental health, his loyalty and whether or not he is compromised. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but removing him may turn out to be a kindness.

He is not my favorite person, however it is very sad to see his decline.

I agree that those close to him need to step up more, for everyones sake.

(91,835 posts)I get the mood swings and behavior all caused by the stroke. I also feel for the people in that room, his yelling and slamming his hands on the desk must have been frightening. His size alone is intimidating and the anger, someone is going to get hurt.

I was just saying upthread that the last article on his Staffers voicing their Concerns.. It had a quote from his wife that basically said that the Staffers were out to get him and trying to bring him down.
So unless she changes that attitude she won't be much help.
Aloha, Nixie! 💙

If I remember, she took over a lot of his responsibilities when he was in treatment for depression. It is a dicey situation for couples and everyone around them.

However, the last article I read about his Staffers Voicing their Concerns it had a quote from his wife saying something like..
So if this keeps up I don't think his wife is going to be much help.

(34,850 posts)It can be done. It has been done for things that never happened.
This IS happening. Let Gov Shapiro work with the PA Democratic Committee to select a replacement immediately then hold a special election. I work.for a manufacturer in Bucks County although I live over the border in NJ.
Between Lamb and Kenyatta you have two solid Democrats. Or do the CA thing and select someone who will pledge not to.run - until a special election.
PA actually has a deep Democratic Party bench.

(13,495 posts)This is what depression can look like. It was ok when we wanted the seat and everybody was saying how brave he was to talk about it.
But this is why depression tended to be a career killer in politics in less enlightened times.
Hope he doesn't hurt anybody or himself. That car accident talk was fucking scary, as was talk of not taking his medication.
It's a tough situation. It'll always be there, you gotta deal with the bad days along with the good days.

(92 posts)Not sure, but yes that car accident was pretty bad and could have been much worse. The plane incident also made him looked entitled and totally out there. He sounds like hes at risk of hurting himself or someone else.

(34,850 posts)When he was 58. Walked out of the hospital (miracle patient) six weeks later. Went back to work for a few months then retired.
His personality changed with very *dark spells*. He could see it. Not being in a high press mergers/acq roles helped his brain heal.completely.
Strokes are brain injuries. I don't believe he's fully healed.
A year after retiring my dad started a consultant business which allowed him to pick and choose which distressed companies he would like to help, and that he could a few months to then go fishing every day.
Fetterman needs to rest. He needs to heal so he can be there for his children. He can't think straight.
Not a psychologist or psychiatrist or doctor of any kind . .. . just saw it first hand.
I really FEEL for him. He's locked in a brain injury.

(1,882 posts)I'm not a fan, I don't like many of the comments he has made or his normalizing of the con artist, but he's not up for re-election until 29. He's not my Senator, he's not a major voice of the Democratic Party and all these leaks, discussions and elevation of him to a major topic seems quite strange.

(1,581 posts)I suffered a serious stroke along with other things, about a year and a half ago. There are some misconceptions that have been posted in the past on here, but in essence a stroke can change certain things in you. For example with me, I can no longer handle any sort of stressful situations. And by stress it could be the absolute simplest of things.
I don't think everything happening can be blamed on the stroke with Fetterman, as is the same with me.

(1,581 posts)And I for one as a stroke victim, take HUGE offense to people who casually write off what's he's doing as a result of a stroke. It paints all stroke victims with a broad brush. Fetterman has issues that predate and supersede stroke.

(6,980 posts)They always think they can still push through and can do better.
However, sometimes, you have to sit down and take stock of things and ask yourself if its even worth it anymore. Let others make the mistakes and lessons learned, even though you know you wouldn't make those. But you can make new ones without realizing it.
Well
on the one hand, I hope he gets the help he needs.
