General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs it wrong I am more furious at the gun lobbyists and their apologists than I am at Adam Lanza?
From all that I've read so far, Adam Lanza was a mentally disturbed young man who performed an unspeakable act of horror upon 27 people and himself, including 20 young children. His mother, also a victim, had numerous guns in her own home despite having knowledge of her son's mental illness.
Certainly, there is plenty of blame to be leveled at Adam Lanza and Nancy Lanza.
However, despite my outrage at them and their culpability, I have to admit that the people at whom I find myself most angry are the gun lobbyists and "gun rights" groups, and those who--either knowingly or unknowingly--chose to apologize for them and spout their false messages.
I'm tired of the false arguments, the reductionist slogans, the attempt to claim that guns were in no way part of what went wrong last Friday. I'm tired of the head in the sand behavior, that somehow "now is not the time." I'm tired of the strawmen arguments, that anyone who wants to talk about meaningful gun control automatically wants a ban on all private gun ownership in the country. I'm tired of the fact that if one attempts to discuss the issue, these folks will use it as an excuse to gloat about the guns they own, as if they were prized possessions and toys instead of being an instrument of death only to be used in the most dire of emergencies.
I'm tired of having to go through the same cycle of discussion over and over and over again from them. Last week we had two mass murders involving guns. Two.
I hear it on other places. But I've heard it here, too. Yesterday someone posted a story that sales of AR-15s had spiked since the shooting. One DUer actually had the gall to use the story as an attempt to be cute and "complain" that stores were already sold out of AR-15s and ammunition and how high he'd had to pay for his ammunition for his AR-15 due to the demand. Disgusting. Truly disgusting.
Adam Lanza is dead now. So is Nancy Lanza. But groups like the NRA, GOA, and everyone who takes upon him/herself to repeat the same talking points and use it as an excuse to showcase their dark obsession are still very much at the forefront, and blocking all means to actually discuss the most important of issues.
Sorry.

(26,001 posts)They made it possible for Lanza to have access to the weapons that he did.
They snarked and bullied anyone who thought the proliferation of such weapons might be a bad idea. The blood is surely on their hands, too.
I couldn't have said it better that you have "villager".

(26,001 posts)because the occasion never warranted.
But sadly, and horrifically, the day was always inevitable, as the ease of availability, and increased lethality of the weapons, grew and grew.
I wonder how the snarking denialists in the gungeon feel about their handiwork now?

(4,340 posts)There will always be people like Adam Lanza. There doesn't have to be people who enable him and future shooters.

(27,461 posts)they are dead. If one's only answer is to hold the Lanza's accountable, then one is saying do nothing. Because, again, the Lanzas are dead.

(36,360 posts)While the mother made very poor choices, she did not deserve to die. The children and other adults certainly didn't deserve their fates and even Adam, who appears to me to have been a very sick man, is also dead.
Lots of dead people who should be alive today, especially the children, but aren't because of the gun laws. One can argue that there may be many causes for this horrific tragedy but in the end, Adam's access to an arsenal is surely to blame.

(5,412 posts)Me, personally? I am mostly angry at the person who stood over a classroom of children and blew them away. And then, as the floor literally turned into a pool of children's blood, walked into another classroom to try and do it all over again.
That's who I am mostly angry at.

(5,412 posts)But question was who to be the most mad at.
And the person I am most mad at is the person that did it.

(43,219 posts)The man was clearly deeply mentally ill, and when it comes to people who are mentally ill and kill as a result of his illness, I just find their whole situation tragic in the classical sense of the word. A lot of "what ifs" and other unanswered questions in that situation.
My actually sense of anger is directed to those who feel--out of duty to an agenda--the need to say we should just shrug our collective shoulders and say, "There's nothing we can do" when there is in fact things we can do and thing we can and should discuss.
