We're sending this communication because we believe it's important for members to protect their pension benefits.
President Obama has agreed to Speaker John Boehner's proposal to change Social Security's benefit calculation. Under the proposal, benefit increases would decrease .3% year by year. Over time, this would hit low-income retirees the hardest, but it would hit everyone.
So we're asking you and other members to send a message to your congress persons:
As part of the fiscal showdown negotiations, President Obama has proposed cutting Social Security for almost all current and future beneficiaries.
Social Security should NOT be a part of the negotiations. It does not contribute even $1 to the deficit, and according to even the most pessimistic projections it is 100% solvent for more than 20 years.
The only way to get congress to take Speaker Boehner's proposal off the table is TELL them it's unacceptable. When enough citizens raise their voices, they get listened to. (It's called leverage, and we either use it or we don't.)

It's not enough for us to sit up in the bleachers and watch. (And complain.) We need to get down in the arena and make our positions known. So take a couple of minutes and shoot your representative an e-mail.

(11,523 posts)I've emailed all three of my congress critters (even though they're right wing as hell) and the White House.
While I agree with President Obama most of the time, and recognize that a repub in the White House (especially THAT one) would be an absolute disaster, I do disagree with the President on some things. This proposal is one of those things I disagree with him on.
I appreciate a well informed post with links to contact all parties involved. Making our voices heard LOUDLY is our best chance to fix this, all the threads I've seen threatening to abandon ship (and ultimately hand the next election to the repubs) accomplish nothing.

(1,108 posts)I just sent emails to Sens. Mikulski and Cardin, Rep. Hoyer, and President Obama urging them to accept no deal that harms Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.
White House yesterday. Senators and Congress today.
