An anecdotal peek into the world of A.I.
So our Lexus car dealer has implemented an A.I. call assistant. We recently received a phone call from "Lexy," the name they have given their A.I. program. Lexy tells us our car is due for service. Strange, because we just had our 15,000 mile service less than 2 months ago. So my wife calls up the dealer and it took several minutes to get past this pest aka Lexy. When she finally gets to talk to a human and explains the situation, the man at the dealer sighs heavily. He then goes on to bitch about their new A.I. assistant, telling my wife this A.I. "monster" is screwing up everything and pissing off all the Lexus customers.
Is this the future of A.I.? Sowing confusion and anger, driving away customers? How much are people spending on this crap?

(4,631 posts)I get how every business is looking for ways to cut overhead and if they can do that and make MY LIFE more easy and efficient too, I am all for it. When they switch the overhead (time or otherwise) to ME, I say NO whenever possible. One of my specialty medical providers recently stopped answering calls to make appointments. They had an automated voice mail and they would call you back at their convenience. Played this game, always had my hands in the garden dirt or an engine or some such and couldn't answer and they just left a message and had to repeat this twice and still no appointment. Endlessly PO'd, I was in the neighborhood of their office in my travels and just stopped by. The receptionist tried to have me call AGAIN as they were not supposed to set up appointments any longer (3 people at the desk doing nothing by the way). So, I politely asked for the office manager. She and I had a very direct and short conversation where she admitted they are getting a lot of complaints and may go back to a system more efficient for patients again. She also personally set up my next appointment and I got her direct line number for the future. So STUPID!

Oh, so the public is just a guinea pig? How about working out the problems OFFLINE before you go public!? This mad dash to "save money" is going to fuck up a lot of shit.

(91 posts)I think the problem here is that that AI assistant has been trained on GOP BS and right wing media. Garbage in means garbage out and AI systems are only as good as the training data they have been fed.
