When the commander in chief peddles cheap, partisan nonsense before active-duty troops at a military base, goading them into booing his opponents and the free press, it's ... different. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Three years later, those complaints sure do seem quaint. NBC News reported:
[Donald Trump] delivered a campaign-style speech heavy on partisan politics [Tuesday] at Fort Bragg before thousands of soldiers and their families on the Armys 250th birthday. Instead of a focus on the Armys anniversary and its history, Trumps speech at the countrys biggest Army installation was more reminiscent of his 2024 campaign stump speeches.
For all intents and purposes, the Republican president treated the active-duty troops at Fort Bragg as if they were just another MAGA audience because, by all appearances, Trump believes members of the armed forces are just another MAGA audience (his own atrocious record on the military and service members notwithstanding).
Over the course of nearly an hour, the incumbent president didnt just throw partisan red meat to his audience condemning transgender student athletes, for example he also goaded U.S. troops into booing Biden. And the free press. And American elected officials Trump doesnt like.

The rhetoric was familiar. Indeed, the speech echoed the kind of rhetoric Trump uses on a near-daily basis. But context matters: Its one thing when a politician peddles cheap, partisan nonsense by way of his social media platform or his latest Fox News appearance; its something else when the commander in chief of the nations strongest fighting force delivers cheap, partisan nonsense to active-duty troops on a military base......
The morning after the event, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told Fox News that Trump who did not serve in the military and who has been credibly accused of disparaging those who wear the uniform as an incredible connection ... with his army.
Except, of course, its not his military; its the countrys military.
When compiling evidence of the presidents authoritarian-style vision, its best to keep examples like this near the top.

WOW! Trump and Hegseth ordered the military to screen attendees for his Fort Bragg rally to exclude any soldier who might disagree with Trump's politics, as well as anyone who was overweight â because Hegseth/Trump didn't want them seen in the crowd by the cameras.

One unit-level message bluntly saying: "No fat soldiers."
"If soldiers have political views that are in opposition to the current administration and they don't want to be in the audience then they need to speak with their leadership and get swapped out," another note to troops said.
Service officials declined to comment when asked about the extent to which troops were screened, whether soldiers displaying partisan cheers on television -- a violation of long-standing Pentagon rules -- would be disciplined or if soldiers who objected to participating in the event, citing disagreements with the administration, would be disciplined or admonished in any way.

Trump speech at Fort Bragg prompts new questions, concerns about politicization of military www.nbcnews.com/politics/nat...

During the speech, uniformed soldiers yelled in support of Trumps political statements and booed former President Joe Biden and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Do you think this crowd would have showed up for Biden? I dont think so, Trump said to boos about Biden.
Trump made other comments about Newsom and about Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, where protests against the administrations crackdown on immigrants have been taking place and where Trump has ordered thousands of National Guard members and active-duty Marines deployed in response. Other Trump comments about the fake news media, transgender people, protesters in California and flag-burning also drew boos from the uniformed military members in attendance.
Trump is known for his rallies at which he goes after and pokes fun at political enemies and other issues, but typically he makes those remarks at political events, not on U.S. military bases.
Such overt political activity on a base is the prerogative of the commander in chief. But military leaders would typically frown upon troops reacting the way they did as inconsistent with military good order and discipline, and, according to one expert, it is a violation of military regulations found in the Uniform Code of Military Justice, or UCMJ.

Trump merchandise sold at Fort Bragg for president's speech now under review
An Army official said images of troops booing Democrats was regrettable.

Earlier this week, Trump spoke at Fort Bragg in North Carolina in celebration of the Army's 250th birthday. At the event, vendors were spotted selling Trump merchandise -- including "Make America Great Again" hats and other "America First" swag. The practice is likely at odds with long-standing Defense Department policy, which prohibits troops from wearing political garb such as hats or flags or expressing their political opinion while in uniform.
The policy is intended to preserve America's tradition of apolitical military forces, serving at the behest of a democratically elected president regardless of party.
The Army is reviewing how pro-President Donald Trump merchandise wound up being sold on one of its bases this week at a service-sponsored event orchestrated by the White House and the president's supporters.
When asked about pictures of troops in uniform buying Trump merch on a military base, a spokesperson for the base said the matter was under review.
"The Army remains committed to its core values and apolitical service to the nation," said Col. Mary Ricks, a spokesperson for the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg.
This was simply another MAGA political event held at an army base before carefully screened MAGA troops
