Thoughts from my Garden

Last edited Thu Jun 12, 2025, 10:49 PM - Edit history (1)

“The phrase ‘passive resistance’ often gives the false impression that this is a sort of ‘do-nothing method’ in which the resister quietly and passively accepts evil. But nothing is further from the truth. For while the nonviolent resister is passive in the sense that he is not physically aggressive toward his opponent, his mind and emotions are always active, constantly seeking to persuade his opponent that he is wrong.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

I've been slowly but surely making progress in my garden. Due to physical issues, I had not been able to really keep up with it. And with all the rain the weeds are attempting to take over. So I may have appeared odd to those driving by while I was pulling weeds in the rain this afternoon. But when I am pulling weeds, I'm thinking about the Troubles we are experiencing in this country today.

The resistance takes many forms. One part involves our elected representatives in state and federal offices. I understand that some wish they were doing more. The truth is they are not in control in DC, and hence are limited in what they can do. They have different talents – hence a Chuck Schumer cannot speak out with the flair and charisma as Jasmine Crockett. So be careful when you see someone talking trash about “Democrats.” As George Harrison sang, “Beware of darkness.”

The court system is supposed to put up road signs and stumbling blocks to prevent the self-destruction of our democracy. Sometimes, it works well. Other times, just the opposite. But there are groups with standing making solid cases against this administration. The obvious question is how does society respond to a president who ignores and violates court orders. In normal times, the legislative branch would support the judicial branch …...but we are beyond anything that resembles “normal.”

What makes it hard is that we are confronted with an opposition that fully rejects all that is good about this country. They are intent upon the destruction of human goodness. I thought of Stephen Miller as I approached the compost pile. I thought of Freud's early stages of development, as “anal retentive” seems to fit like a glove. I am serious, and thus avoiding jokes about his splattering shit when he talks.

His essence reminds me of some things Freud thought that was seriously debated long ago: the possibility that, at least in some, there is a “death drive” that takes hold of the internal steering wheel. He found it most common among conservative white men, when they are driven to deconstruct valued things that took years to make. There is, of course, much more about this pathology, perhaps most commonly associated with serial killers. I am certain that Freud would have recognized Miller as an extremely sick man.

Thus, as I stopped for a drink of water, a question arose in my mind: how do we confront about one-third of adult Americans who – consciously or unconsciously – want to deconstruct our country? I know there is no immediate solution. I like the rallies and protests. I like contacting my elected representatives. These are helpful for us to build the foundation we need.

We have two important factors to consider. First, our opposition believe they have license to be violent, and second, they will try to infiltrate and disrupt peaceful protests. There are, of course, people who feel so disconnected from the larger society they move to Bob Marley's “Burning and Looting.” If we remain strong, we can disassociate from any type of violence.

We need to study the tactics of Gandhi and King. We need people to put these tactics into practice. Nonviolently. With the understanding that some will go to the ER, some will go to jail, and some will go to the cemetery. As an old person, I advocate our generation be the first wave. It will rouse the necessary public conscience, perhaps slowly, but definitely surely.

But those dopamine (pun intended) kicks don't pay the rapidly increasing grocery bill, so the balance between pain and pleasure has been in the dicktater's favor. And BY THE WAY, courtesy of the economic revolution that Joe Biden initiated, a "bottom up" or "middle out" economy.

Lacking that, the pain will increase. But a cult's a cult. If some leave, they merely escaped the Kool-Aid remedy.

We need to focus on that weird, inscrutable group that was successfully lied to about Gaza, about women, about immigrants, about personal liberty, about economic stimulus, about lower prices, and so on and so forth.

One aspect that I have believed in, is a consistent, continual and combined message from all Democrats and Independents in this battle.

Here's the problem. A team with no coach.

Not that DNC will notice, but I put them on notice.
'DNC is bringing a pea shooter to a gun fight"

Here's a message to share.
Why isn't EVERYONE pounding the table with this simple and powerful message?

Of course, there are others.
But in terms of busting ass for the cause in a highly visible way, we have
Bernie, AOC and Gavin Newsom sticking it to the dicktater,
in a way that's powerful, persistent and persuasive.

It amazes me that more maga cultists don't recognize that they have been hookwinked by a sociopath. As you note, it doesn't seem to dawn on them until, like three people I've seen on television, they say, "I voted for him, but didn't think it would hurt me."

I would add Rep. Jasmine Crockett to your list of people showing leadership.

I keep thinking about that repentant Trump Voter who after his confession said
But I would never vote for "that woman"
Their minds are so poisoned.

There's a Buddhist saying: "Holding in hate is like swallowing poison and expecting the other person to die"

I posted some FAFO and other graphics in another thread.

I like graphics. My Dad was an artist and I am an amateur photographer. (good one, though)

Was not a pacifist. Bayard Rustin was ,he taught Dr. King the principles of nonviolence. Black people had no choice because the laws and the power of government was against them. As time passed young people didn’t feel they had to live with those restrictions white people beating black people will elicit an angry response. Push people to the wall ,they will push back.

I'm fortunate, as one of my late friends knew King. He knew Coretta better. She supported him in his legal case, and wrote a message for the back cover of a book on Rubin's trials. He also knew Malcolm.

In his youth, he thought Malcolm had the best answers. As he aged, he came to recognize that Martin was correct. This, of course, is because Martin, Rubin, and Malcolm very evolving human beings. It isn't anywhere near as important where they started, other than to compare to where they ended up. Sure, King learned from Rustin, as well as his study of Gandhi. Even after he became non-violent, he had a shotgun in his home to protect his family. He eventually gor rid of it.

More people need to evolve to a higher state than we see currently. The evolution of human beings is the evolution of the consciousness.

We are becoming more primitive. Religion forgetting the teachings of Christ, wanting to hurt people to feel more powerful , millionaire’s hoarding money and wanting more and the American people voting for a man who should be in an institution instead of leading a once great nation. It is wonderful to hold Dr. king in high regard but most of us are human and as he said violence is the language of the unheard and no one is listening to the folks on the bottom.

primitive is prime. There is no evidence that people today, with nice houses and cars and internet, etc., are in any way more evolved than our ancient ancestors. Human evolution is not found on the outside, it is a state of being.

I am fully aware of what King said about riots. It would demonstrate the risks of taking shortcuts to logical thought to think that mean he was okay with violence. A most obvious example of this is found in the events of King's first march in Memphis, and his interactions after the violence with the leadership of the gang.

I think he was saying he understood why some oppressed people would resort to it.
Our media glorifies it, our leaders have destabilized nations and stolen their resources and some Americans think this is wrestling. I don’t hear many black folks feeling great about passive resistance, many of them are saying we will no longer put our bodies on the line to be arrested and beaten. It is morally wrong to expect more from us than the dominant culture is willing to endure.

and I see opportunity for Democrats in that. A campaign about how to save what is great about our country would be optimistic and positive, but we could also use it to point out the serious harm R's are doing. Good post!

Our party has a great opportunity. And that includes comparing what both parties do for people. I remember Malcolm X saying that if you place a clean, sparkling glass of water next to a filthy glass of sludge, you can trust a thirsty person to make the right choice.
