Three different advocacy organisations representing military families said they had heard from dozens of affected service members who expressed discomfort about being drawn into a domestic policing operation outside their normal field of operations. The groups said they have heard no countervailing opinions.
The sentiment across the board right now is that deploying military force against our own communities isnt the kind of national security we signed up for, said Sarah Streyder of the Secure Families Initiative, which represents the interests of military spouses, children and veterans.
Active service members are prohibited by law from speaking publicly about their work. But Streyder, of the Secure Families Initiative, said she had heard dozens of complaints indirectly through their families. She had also seen a written comment passed along to her organization from a national guard member who described the assignment as shitty particularly compared with early secondments to help with wildfire relief or, during the Covid pandemic, vaccination outreach. Both of those experiences were uncomplicatedly positive, a contribution back to the community, Streyder described the message as saying. This is quite the opposite.
According to Janessa Goldbeck, a Marine Corps veteran who runs the Vet Voice Foundation, the feeling was similar among some of the troops being sent from Twentynine Palms. Among all that I spoke with, the feeling was that the marines are being used as political pawns, and it strains the perception that marines are apolitical, Goldbeck said. Some were concerned that the Marines were being set up for failure. The overall perception was that the situation was nowhere at the level where marines were necessary.

(1,743 posts)As a vet, I know some are right, some are left. You have to leave that at the door. Myself and many others followed our orders to deploy to Iraq and the Middle East despite knowing the whole thing was a tragic farce.
Now, troops are in a similar position, however through the ugly looking glass of Trumpism. Remember, aside from asshole true believer Trumpists, these troops just want to get it over without trouble. They are being used, with no choice in the matter.
It's the civilian leadership that is doing the wrong thing here, the troops are pawns.

(20,456 posts)Whats unlawful is the tricky part. Particularly with folks who generally follow orders. That makes the bar a bit higher. My Lai? That ones easy. Standing around in downtown LA with your thumb up your butt and nothing really to do but be props on a political set? That one is more difficult. Ordered to do a Kent State and were back to easy decision.

(10 posts)...after being deployed in an American city against Americans, regardless of what side of the political aisle they come from, is probably a psychopath.

(4,576 posts)could get them prosecuted. I'm sure that their training does NOT include that little tidbit. It may be especially helpful right now, since their very presence in LA is on very questionable legal grounds.

(993 posts)I would hate to be in their position today, at the mercy of the delusions of Orange Julius Caesar.

(17,958 posts)Is clearly unconstitutional, unethical, and immoral. Any who comply are gestapo.
They are not providing defense. They should just walk away. But cowardice reigns in the name of the almighty dollar.
Any who comply do not deserve one more peaceful moment in their lives.
