I bought a 1-liter bottle of average-quality olive oil, today.

A couple of months ago, that same-sized and same-brand oil at the same grocery store cost $12.00. Today I paid $20.00. So nice to be living in these glorious Trumpian economic times...

not adulterated, inexpensive extra-virgin ...

Partial list of fake extra-virgin olive oils

Some of the brands that have failed to meet the extra-virgin olive oil standards include Bertolli, Carapelli, Colavita, Star, Pompeian, Santa Sabina, Primadonna, Antica Badia, Sasso, and Coricelli.
Additionally, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, Giant, and Whole Foods have also failed to meet the extra-virgin requirements. Other brands such as Filippo Berio, Mazola, Mezzetta, and Newman’s Own are also selling fake olive oil.

California Olive Ranch. It's on my Fresh list right now. It was up to $27 a few months back, but has been dropping steadily and is now $15.59 for 25.4 oz. Good stuff.

Olive grooves are under extreme pressure. 2023 harvest in Spain was 1/3 of normal. That isn't counting those huge fires in Greece and Spain. Tariffs are maybe adding 5-10%, the rest is declining harvests.

This isn't on Trump, although he is definitely exacerbating the situation with his stupid-ass tariffs.

The GOP has been pushing oil since Reagan on through until now and his trade policies are going to hit, the dollar is loosing value against other currencies. That only helps our exports, which are quickly being avoided and replaced. I expect there to become a boycott and divest against the USA coming very soon. Trade requires an exchange, if we make our imports more expensive than there will be less demand for those and then less willingness to buy our stuff overseas.

because luxuries like olive oil are not part of the "market basket".

Just about everything I buy is 30-50% higher than a year ago. SO I am buying less of everything. Inflation reports won't show most of this, but the GDP numbers will.

That in 2024, All food suppliers jacked up the prices to record profit levels for themselves, to make Biden look worse. Think back to Jan 2024, when they not only raised food prices 10-20%, but made the amount smaller, adding another 10-20% to their bottom lines..........
What was a 200 dollar bill, has now become a 300 dollar bill on grocery shopping trips........

It was a time when the CORPORATIONS went all out to do anything/everything to make Biden look bad, in order to try and make Trump look good...s
And it wasn't just groceries............

We are already in an economic Recession. The inept and corrupt Turd Administration will not admit this indisputable "fact." There is rising inflation/stagflation coupled with rising interest rates and a weakened dollar (the dollar in your pocket is worth 87 cents). It is just going to get a whole lot worse because there is no one in the current corrupt and fucked-up Administration who is capable of managing these economic crises. Their only 'solution' is to babble about cutting the interest rates -- a meritless act which will do little to solve the massive increased pricing problems which everyone is now experiencing in every store and shop which they frequent on Main Street, USA. Vote every Republican Nazi rat bastard out in the mid-term elections. These greedy, selfish, criminal motherfuckers are beyond evil.

Olives and olive oil have been getting pricier for some time now. A lot of the areas with significant olive production have been suffering from drought and excessive summer heat for the past few years. Large swaths of Greece burned to the ground last summer. Spain, a major producer, is suffering from drought and fires, as well. And, we all are aware of the conditions in California....

Fri Jun 13, 2025, 02:24 PM

in the last year or two. Spain, Italy, and Greece all had drought like heat spells which reduced the amount of oil to hit the market.
My favorite olive oil from Italy is right at $16 per liter.
My grocery stores have 750 ml bottles between 12 and 20 euro.
So $20 for good olive oil is not out of line.

23. The olive harvests here have been catastrophic for years now
Fri Jun 13, 2025, 02:34 PM

Both Italy and Spain have had devastating tree disease epidemics that have ruined many harvests. There was one orchard in Catalunya that sold olive oil commercially, diluted with oil from Tunisia, Portugal and other minor producers, but kept several hundred liters of the pure stuff for family and friends. I usually got three five-liter containers a year of the pure production. NO comparison, but it has been three years since we have had ANYTHING from them.

If you're wondering about European/North African/Turkish olive oil, the price has gone up here as drastically as it has on the shelf of any American importer. €20 a liter for decent quality olive oil here in Europe (€75 if you can find a 5 liter container of the good stuff) is no longer excessive, but the norm.
