ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I got there kinda late and just wandered around, I'd guess there were maybe a few hundred people spread down the roadside, which seemed pretty good given that there were quite a few other protests in the vicinity. This is a blue area, but even so, the support from people driving past was overwhelming. A number of people were holding "Honk if you support democracy" signs and there was SO. MUCH. HONKING!
Here are a few pics of some signs from the protest -- I asked most of these folks if I could take their pictures, but I thought it might be prudent to crop the pics to hide their faces anyway.

(86,644 posts)Local news CANT not cover it if they know more than half the county is talking about it (or maybe even on-scene, themselves). And most of the local stations, with decent-size news departments, are affiliated with one of the big networks whose staffers will be wanting to feature that local stuff in their own coverage.

there were 1500 people in the mile between the Maritime Museum and the Safeway.
Of the roughly 3000 cars that went by, a few were indifferent, fewer than 10 expressed disagreement, and the rest were supportive.

(86,644 posts)It looked like that much, or more. Where we were was in a series of semi-narrow curbed grass sections within a parking lot area, and assorted access roads weaving in and out.
Where I stood with our Indivisible Clackamas group was in one of those long narrow parking-lot border areas. LOTS of people were there! Everywhere you looked, in that area, you saw lines of peaceful protesters. The overall mood was light-hearted, friendly, and happy to be there! Many of us recognized and acknowledged fellow protesters even while not knowing them by name yet. You start seeing familiar faces if you keep going to some of these things.
One guy brought his trumpet with him, and gave us lots of bits like youd hear, either at patriotic fests or in classic Warner Brothers cartoons! Helped keep the mood fun and entertaining. The weather cooperated, too! LOTS of cars were weaving in and out and waving, or giving us a thumbs-up. Ive been to a bunch of these by now, and theres always a small number of naysayers, but Ive never seen more than five at any of these events. More often, its three oppositionals.
AND the big FUCK TRUMP car was there, too! Parked elsewhere in the parking area. Weve seen it before at our sign-wavings and it seems to be a regular feature by now. It never fails to add big smiles and a bit of spice to the overall recipe!
OMGWTF
(4,771 posts)It was great -- there was someone handing out water, free buttons, music, chanting, party hats, red clown noses, two bubble machines and clever, grammatically correct signs everywhere with loads of support from people driving by.

KT2000
(21,485 posts)had a turn out of around 3,000
I have to say it would include surrounding areas that would bring the population up to about 12,000
The turnout was great. Last time all the signs were about medicare but this time I saw only one of those. The others were about all issues, the big picture of fascism.

(6,282 posts)Hardly any birds flipped from cars going by. LOTS more younger people here where retirees are the biggest demographic. One apple cheeked young man, passing by me as we were all leaving "I LOVE America!" He was absolutely radiant. Guessing it was his first protest.
People in their 70s, 80s, 90s and several young families with well informed youngsters who seemed to be really enjoying the friendly crowd and quite proud to be a part of it.
One dear local activist had printed out scores of pages with the lyrics to "It's a Grand Ol Flag". She handed the sheets out and led us in singing. It took me back to my grandad teaching us that song... on Flag Day so long ago.
It filled my heart, renewed my strength, and gave me hope.

(71 posts)always amazes me. We are both in our 80s and I use an upright walker, but I never hesitate to participate as I have only experienced kindness and
helpfulness from fellow marchers. That was again true today in Gresham OR. The turnout was incredible and so was the support from passers-by
including a fire truck that was extremely loud.

at the end. I was on an elevated area and it was so confusing. Thousands and thousands of marchers at the 2 separate protests which were about 1/2 mile apart had different routes to march. Then they ended up converging at an intersection and no one could move!!!!! Fortunately I am experienced and was able to figure out a path and since I am short and small (but a VERY large sign acting as a sail almost blew me away) I was able to squeeze my way to the front of the march as I usually do and then I had to stop.
My eyes couldn't believe it!!!!! It was a sea of 40,000 people!!! Absolutely incredible!!!
WE MUST CONTINUE TO DO THIS!!!!! IF WE DO THEN WE CAN SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY!
STAND UP.!!! FIGHT BACK!!! DO NOT STOP!!!
Updated...40,000 San Diegans protested...I KNEW IT WAS UNDER REPORTED!!!!!

(3,060 posts)by the people in vehicles driving by.
Ususallly we demonstrated downtonwn but this one was on a major thoroughfare to shopping, potentially reaching more people.
The people driving by had signs of their own. We were demonstrating, but the people driving by were demonstrating too.
I wonder if anyone anticipated this. It was a back and forth. We were talking to each other. People were driving by to see the demonstration. A couple were Trumpers, but overwhelmingly sympthaizers honking back. My favorite was "No King's here.", a small silgn in a passsenger's lap. But I also loved the dogs with rainbow colored vests.
When we arrived, it was a rush to honk to the demonstrators, on our wy to uor parking space. When we were on the other side, as demonstrators, it was a rush to hear most of the vehicles honking. Grudually, 60% become 90%. People were arriving increasingly not to shop but to join the demonstration. The traffic gradually backed up to nearly standstill. There were too many people coming by and they hd to slow down to see the signs.
Tis a result I don't think was anticipated. It will either encourage these kinds of demonstrations or kill lthem. We are learning how to resist. We are smart. We are true in our hearts. We wiil win
WE WILL WIN.
