Before taking the cat to the vet for the last time, we went to the early local No Kings rally thinking it would be small

Boy were we wrong. In the pouring rain protesters lined the street on the main drag through this small community as far as the eye could see.

It's a hard day for my wife and I, but it was uplifting to see the long string of people, stretching perhaps for miles, standing in the heavy downpours, waving at the cars and even big trucks honking in appreciation. We only got the finger a few times, and splashed by people driving close to the curbs to spray us with runoff, but overall everyone here was in for the good.

I feel a little better.

I see other people are seeing the same thing all around the country.

Update: It's done. We had a very compassionate vet, who let us know that her vital signs were fading and it was time, and left the decision - which we'd already made - to us. It was clear she wouldn't have made it through the night. We were with her at the end. I did cry. I didn't think I would, but I did.

Thanks to all here for the sympathy and advice.

Where we are in New England, the passers-by were honking about 70% (my unofficial poll). The smiles were priceless! Evolve Dammit Jun 14 #10

My cat passed away recently. I bought one of those little cat statues with angel wings and put it in my flower garden. She is gone, but will never be forgotten.

I had a pleasant surprise at my local rally, as well. I live in a bright red hellhole, but we had at least a couple thousand turn out. Most of the people who drove by honked in support.

that we need to deal with. Until we don't.

Many warm thoughts to you and your wife, and the memories you'll have.

Some were ecstatic to see the large crowds and signs. It was very effective IMHO.

The one I attended with some friends just seemed to extend for blocks! Hopefully you’ll have a lot of positive thoughts from that No Kings event to help you through an otherwise VERY challenging day.

Here’s a hug!

I left with her empty carrier. Upon pulling out of the vet's parking lot, I heard meowing in the back seat. I didn't even look. I knew it was she.

When I arrived home, I heard her claws running across the hardwood floors, back and forth, back and forth. She was feeling good for the first time since she got cancer. She told me to tell Dr. Meredith that she is one helluva vet.

Then she appeared on my camera in a picture.

Some say goodbye, some don't.

We all have different talents. This is one of mine.

I'm glad you had a good crowd at the protest to lift your spirits, so to speak.
