What a beautiful day we had for a protest march. I attended the No Kings Day protest in San Diego this morning. I live across San Diego Bay in Coronado. We are technically an island and there are three principle ways off the island; drive over the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, down the Strand and around the bay (25 miles), or take the 15-minute ferry ride where you land about two blocks from the starting point. I arrived at the ferry in Coronado, around 9:11 am, paid for a round-trip ticket, and got in line. After about 10 minutes, I was able to get on the ferry. I've ridden the ferry many times during the weekday as well as the weekend and I've never seen the ferry completely full until today. It held over 150 people when it left and there were at least 50 more people waiting who couldn't get on. This from a town that's traditionally been a republican stronghold.
The police estimated over 20,000 people participated. We walked a 1.5 mile loop down Harbor Drive and then came back on Pacific Highway which is downtown San Diego is really a broad street. The people were loud but peacefully. Just for fun, I pulled out my phone and opened a sound meter app to see how loud the crowd was. It was in the high 60 decibel range.
