(27,929 posts)Think of it this way: you have fewer glasses of milk, but less milk overall.
Less money, fewer dollar bills. Fewer paint brushes, less artwork.
Fewer involves specific numbers. Less involves a smaller overall quantity. The problem is that people are very careless and don't distinguish between those two very important concepts. Also, "more" is the correct way to indicate larger, both in specific numbers and in overall quantity.
I am very much looking forward to being the Grammar Queen, so I can make sure everyone is always grammatically correct.

(27,929 posts)I honestly think that precision is speaking or writing, in word usage, in using the precise, specific words that describe or explain, that those things really matter.
I can also hope (no doubt as futile a hope as has ever been hoped) that at least one person will read my post and start using those words correctly.
So yeah, words matter. What they mean and how they are used matter.

(26,857 posts)To my surprise, a couple of the grocery stores in our area actually have checkout lanes for "10 items or fewer." A pleasant shock.
Sloppy language use drives me bonkers. I think I must have been an English teacher or editor in a previous life.
