"I can only say I have the greatest respect for the fact that the Israeli army and the Israeli government had the courage to do this," Merz continued.
Merz reiterated that for years the Iranian regime has plagued the region with terror and that this terror would only be more possible with nuclear weapons.
"Israel lacks the necessary weapons; the Americans have them." Merz continued. He followed by saying that if the Iranian regime had been willing to negotiate, then further military intervention would not have been necessary.

(9,441 posts)And once again do you realize you are posting the words of a right wing German politician?
"The Christian Democratic Union of Germany is a Christian democratic and conservative political party in Germany. It is the major party of the centre-right in German politics. Friedrich Merz has been federal chairman of the CDU since 31 January 2022, and has served as the Chancellor of Germany since 6 May 2025."

And I don't believe Iran was negotiating with the US "during an interview at the G7", as the article states.

Still, it's a good thing, no?

(12,994 posts)I have to chuckle at the proposition of Iran getting more inclined to get a nuke or ten than they are right now.
But still, it's a good thing that they are months away from getting a nuke, no? You seem reluctant to address the subject for some reason...

(9,441 posts)Just in case you need that answer again here it is.
Not if it makes them more inclined to get one. Right?
Or do you think Israel has the capability to destroy the Fordow plant?

(12,994 posts)It's a good thing. Simple enough to just say it out loud.

(9,441 posts)You asked me if it was a good thing that Israel was attacking Iran's nuclear capability, I said it wasn't if it moved Iran to be even more inclined to do so. Since we can all agree that the attack by Israel will prob move Iran to be more inclined to do so than before the attacks I think it was a bad Idea. If you wanted to ask me if continued attacks on Iran will make them even more inclined to become nuclear capable then once again I think it would. If you wanted to ask me if future attacks on Iran will make them even more inclined to become nuclear capable then once again I think it would. No, it is not a good thing. Iran has proven that they will make an agreement to not produce nuclear weapons as they have done so before. Any current or future attacks will not push them to make that agreement it will push them in the opposite direction. Does that explain it to you clearly?

(12,994 posts)It is not possible for Iran to be more motivated to have nukes than they are right now. They have been pursuing nuclear weapons for at least a decade. They do not uphold previous agreements, and they are currently violating them to pursue nukes. How can their pursuit of nukes be more motivating after they pay a heavy price for pursuing nukes? The ayatollahs may be insane, but not to the point of doing the same thing over again and expecting different results.
Sure you can think whatever you want, but don't pretend reasonable people will agree with you.
But I think I got your position on the nuclear Iran: it's a bad idea to destroy their nuclear infrastructure, but only in the event that what you, for no apparent reason, presume to be plausible turns out to be the outcome of a campaign to rid the biggest supporter of terrorism in the world of any possibility of producing nukes for their proxies.
Given the odds, I will go out on a limb and say it's all good.

(9,441 posts)You are acting like people have a dial that can only turn their motivation up to a certain amount. People strap bombs to themselves and walk into crowds blowing themselves up, I certainly think they can be willing to work on nukes while their country is being bombed and more motivated the longer the war goes on. As for my thinking that we can get Iran to stop working towards getting a nuke history proves me correct.

Look around at how "smashingly" things went in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why, it will be as "great" as the Arab Spring.
Have your children or grandchildren run down to the recruiting station yet?
I have no love lost for the religious nutbags ruling Iran, but at least I have some "skin in the game" when it comes to calling for "regime change" in faraway foreign lands.
Not to worry! I'm sure Bibi and Donnie Dipshit have a detailed plan.

(7,809 posts)No one wants a nuclear armed Iran (except maybe North Korea), even most of the other Middle Eastern countries. I imagine many of the powerful ME countries are secretly quite pleased about all this.
Maybe Iran will think twice now since theyve been exposed as basically defenseless, before they continue to fund and arm Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, etc. Probably not but they know now that Israel can bomb them at will with no resistance.
