(19,742 posts)Since the death of my husband, the amount of Social Security for the two of us will be reduced to less than $2,300 a month from just under $3,000 now that my husband has been deceased since May 18th. At 73, I have no plans to go back into the work force. It will take a few more months until I have an idea of the overall monthly income I will be receiving from the US Military, the VA, two places where my husband worked at, etc., in addition to SS.
I will generate additional income from my sewing business doing Alterations and Custom sewing for clients all over the country. At least I know that before my husband died, he did leave me with a pot to piss in through a number of investments, unlike my father leaving my mother without one when he died in August of 2000.
Mike Collins is out of his mind if he thinks Seniors are going to go back to work. Even Walmart are not hiring scores of Seniors as greeters these days.

(19,742 posts)We would take our kids there a lot. McGovern's Pub right across the street there at the corner of 7th and Chestnut Sts.
Then there is Mancini's Char House on 7th St. before you get to the former St. Paul Civic Center now Excel Energy Center. The BEST place in the Twin Cities for Black Angus steaks and charred garlic bread.

And my St Paul Irish buddy of over 45+ years loves all the

And occasionally a Rueben at Cecils Deli.
Years ago, The owner of Cecils provided all the sandwiches, deli meats cheeses, bread, mustard, pickles, for my late brother in law memorial at my relatives house in Lake Elmo. ( I believe the owner of Cecils , the husband, died a few years ago) At no charge. Free.

I was there, outside, heard with my own ears.
He called one of his daughters to come close to him,
And he told her
.
I CANNOT STAND THIS DAMN HOSPITAL FOOD,
GO GET ME A CHEESEBURGER, SNEAK IT IN PAST THE ICU NURSE.
We were shaking our heads, but his daughter did it anyway.
He also had stated something like
. If I cant eat what I want I might as well die.
He was quite a character, Hispanic, gun dealer, wheeler-dealer,
At one point had himself a gentlemans ranch in Texas, maybe 180 acres,
Nice pond Id say a 3 to 4 acre sized pond,,
Still had his flat-top haircut from his Coast Guard days.
Hard duty patrolling the Hawaiian islands just after WW2 ended

(14,461 posts)I don't recall that at all. In fact, I remember them vehemently denying they were going to cut SS & Medicare. The cuts may have been visible to those who can read between the lines to see the consequences of their policies and their long term goals, which for generations has been to dismantle FDR's New Deal and LBJ's Great Society.

So did millions and millions of other Americans!!! We EARNED it, dammit!!!
Hey, Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), YOU FIRST!!! Renounce YOURS, FIRST, FUCKWAD! Make sure when youre old enough to collect it, you send it all BACK. Unless youre already collecting it, in which case, cancel it and REFUND every penny of it BACK TO THE TAXPAYERS!!!

(7,990 posts)But then I guess he'll decide to forego his benefits and continue to try to be reelected and stay in the House.
Even if he loses his cushy job in the House, he could get a job at a fast food outlet, or retail store, and use that income to replace the Social Security money he doesn't feel old people like him should have.

(723 posts)my 85 year old father (who happens to have Parkinson's) and my 86 year old mother that they have to go get jobs after not working for 20+ years. I'm sure there are a ton of companies in podunk, Minnesota (where it's not exactly easy to find decent employment - even for able-bodied young people to find a decent job) looking for their particular skill set.

(2,377 posts)... The money in a person's Social Security account is THEIR FUCKING MONEY! Not the government's, and certainly not yours to do with as you please. The GOP domestic terror organization has been trying to steal the hard-earned money belonging to working folks since 1933, and your mindless malice and slavering greed will be the end of all of you, but not nearly soon enough to suit me.

(7,990 posts)This guy's a first class idiot.
First, the disabled are on Social Security because they can't work, at least in any meaningful way that would allow them to support themselves. Even then, a disabled person can receive benefits, with a cap on the amount of work related income while receiving that benefit; there's a formula on how that is determined.
Second, Social Security was set up to be a fund that would help retirees pay their bills. As it is defined now, you can retire with a partial benefit at age 62, and with full benefit at age 67.
Even when retired, you can earn up to $23,400 without any penalty if you are under age 67. Once you reach age 67, you can earn as much as you can and not incur any Social Security penalty.
So, the idea of "getting off of Social Security and going back to work" isn't valid. It's not going to change anything in a large majority of cases, and once you reach 67 years of age, it's just plain ridiculous.
How is it that so many ignorant people get elected as Republicans?
Hey Joe
(69 posts)They must lash out with their cruelty and hatred for anyone who isnt a rich white man.
He would do the country a better service if he picked up a shovel and started digging ditches for the remainder of his life. But that would be actual work (!) of which he is not familiar.
Hes probably never done anything harder than shuffle papers and attend meetings. Never had a callous on his soft little hands.
What would he know about real work that takes its toll over decades.

(7,990 posts)My father and brother were mill workers. I saw how it ground them down. I was fortunate. I was the youngest of 4 and the only one who was able to go to college, but I spent my summers working in that same mill that contributed to the demise of my brother, so I have first hand knowledge of their struggle to get ahead.
The Republicans in our government don't value the kind of honest, hard work that built this country.
And here they are, oh so anxious to throw millions of people out of our country, and deny millions more of any kind of government programs that actually help the people that they seem to have so much disdain for.
Sure, they want our labor, but resent our desire to better ourselves or get any kind of reward for decades of hard work.
Sorry, it just sets me off to see how little this latest crop of Republicans respect American workers, and those who come here looking for a better life.

that the Republicans' real goal is to kick seniors and the disabled off Social Security, unless there is more to the clip than what Ive seen.
Im kind of surprised Im the first to point this out. Also quite pissed I have to sort of defend the piece of crap congressman. He might have been having fantasies about kicking retired people off of SS, but he didnt actually say that.

(73,231 posts)The number of jobs is a finite set. More people just means more unemployment. Now, they collect unemployment insurance (which they paid into for decades). So, it really saves nothing.
Secondly, he's talking about people who added value to the overall economy for tens of years. 35, 40, even 50 years.
This dolt has a job that adds ZERO economic value. Elected office is a cost center, not a profit center.
If anybody should get back into the workforce, it's him.
