Eighteen Democratic senators crossed the aisle to vote for the legislation on Tuesday, siding with the Republican majority in the 53-47 Senate. Republican senators Josh Hawley and Rand Paul were the only members of their party to oppose the measure.
Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic senator from Massachusetts, has been among the most outspoken as the ranking member on the Senate banking committee, warning that the bill creates a super highway for Trump corruption. She has also warned that the bill would allow major technology companies, such as Amazon and Meta, to launch their own stablecoins.
The stablecoin legislation still faces several hurdles before reaching the presidents desk. It must clear the narrowly held Republican majority in the House, where lawmakers may try to attach a broader market structure bill sweeping legislation that could make a second passage through the Senate more difficult. Trump has said he wants stablecoin legislation on his desk before Congress breaks for its August recess, now just under 50 days away.

(74 posts)I don't mind when DEMS vote in support of the GOP or even Trump but I expect them to receive something in return. That was how things were done at one time (I scratch your back, you scratch mine). But here they voted to insulate Trump's crypto scam and received nothing in return. The main tool the DEMS have to oppose the GOP is their vote and they just cannot use that tool effectively.

Here is an article behind some of the thinking from both sides on the Democratic side.
But other Democrats see this is a rare chance for Congress to get ahead of an issue, arguing they cant afford to wait until they win back power in Washington to act especially with how quickly technology moves.
I think every politician will say this. Its the same thing about any industry that they dont like or understand, Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., who supports the GENIUS Act, told NBC news in an interview.
Democrats clash over crypto behind closed doors
The GENIUS Act now heads to the House, where the Democratic divide over cryptocurrency which can often fall along generational lines came to a head during a private meeting last week attended by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., other Democratic leaders and committee ranking members, according to three sources who were in the room and a fourth source who was briefed on the meeting.
