The President was speaking from the White House on the occasion of the installation of two new flag poles. He was asked about Iran and said they were always chanting “Death to America.” President Trump knows nothing about history so, of course, he doesn’t know why they hate us.
Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh was elected by the Iranian Parliament and a beloved figure in Iran. He introduced social and economic policies, including social security, land reforms, and the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry in 1951, which ended decades of Great Britain’s control of Iranian oil.
As a WW II ally and not wanting to lose control of Iranian oil, Britain appealed to the United States for help, which eventually led to the CIA orchestrating the 1953 overthrow of Mossadegn and restoring power to the Shah. On August, 19, 2013, the CIA publicly admitted its role. To ensure the Shah’s continued control, the CIA also helped establish SAVAK, the Iranian secret intelligence organization known for widespread spying, arrests, disappearances, torture chambers and prisons.
Many of the organizers of the Iranian Revolution and the taking of US Embassy staffers as hostages in 1979, pointed directly to the Coup and SAVAK as their inspiration. It was our original sin that still fuels the anti-Americanism today.
Imagine where we might be today if we hadn’t overthrown their democratic government. No Shah, no theocracy.
