(76,984 posts)Fascinating case. At first, I assumed she was likely guilty. As the first trial unfolded, it was clear the prosecution could not prove their case beyond a reaonable doubt. The "investigation," headed by a burned out investigator, was corrupt. It seems clear that Ms. Read did not kill him. The sad thing is that we will never know what actually happened.
I assume that the FBI's interest in the case was part of a wider investigation into police corruption.

(399 posts)Called A body in the snow about the first trial. I think the FBI interest was due to an ex agent being in the house he was found dead outside of.

(76,984 posts)Actually, Higgins was a current ATF agent at the time, rather than FBI. But there is no evidence the FBI investigated his potential role. They focused on if Ms. Read's vehicle hit John O'Keefe. The firm they hired documented that she did not hit him.

(76,984 posts)that if she was guilty -- and as I wasn't there that night, I do not know -- that there was still evidence planted. Proctor was burned out, as his texts document beyond a shadow of a doubt. He took his friends' word, before going to the scene. He was furious because he was convinced that Ms. Read had killed a cop. And he wanted a sure conviction, hence the evidence that he and the police chief planted.
This is merely my opinion. I base it not only on the evidence presented at both trials, but also from studying such instances of police corruption from 1966 on. It is never a case of a large number of police involved in a conspiacy -- it is always two or three, who are trusted by their co-workers. (The same would apply to those inside the house, if he was indeed attacked there. It would not be 30 people in on a conspiracy. Two or three.) More, the arm wounds could not have been from the vehicle. Having been attacked by a German Shepherd when I was ten, I recognize the pattern. Again, just my opinion.

(399 posts)After we watched the documentary. Our bet was he had had an affair with the wife in the house, went in looking for more while Karen waited in the car. He was attacked by the dog (that they promptly got rid of) and got the shit kicked out of himself then thrown out in the front yard with the hopes the snow plow would cover up the cri.e. when the plow didn't hit the body they had to blame someone.
The whole BS about "she killed a cop" drove negative public opinion even though they had no real evidence and just made up speculation.
