(25,183 posts)Boner is not one of them, they know it, and will remove him, especially if he cuts any kind of deal with President Obama, even if it is defeated in Congress.
He's toast, and I'm not just talking about his tan.

(11,175 posts)The other Republicans with the most stature are members of the leadership team and are allied with Boehner. For example, Cantor wouldn't challenge Boehner, and the Tea Partiers would have no reason to support him if he did.
My guess is that there'll be grumbling but no strong conservative challenger will emerge. Boehner will be re-elected Speaker more or less by default.
Dream scenario: Successful conservative revolt installs some real right-wing extremist as the Republican candidate for Speaker. (The Speaker doesn't have to be a member of the House, and some of the Freepers were touting Gingrich for the job.) This so horrifies the more centrist Republicans, especially those from districts Obama carried, that a bunch of them defect, and Pelosi becomes Speaker.
Perhaps a more realistic alternative: In a compromise, these hypothetical centrist Republicans change parties but on condition that the new Speaker be one of the more conservative Democrats. The Dems go along with this so they can all get their committee chairships back. Pelosi takes one for the team.
Alas, I still think Boehner can have the job if he wants it. But we can dream.
