It varies considerably by region. Gas is probably going to go up a lot with all of the tensions in the Middle.East right now. And then if we have a major hurricane in Texas or Louisiana, it might go through the roof!

Much of that is taxes. Since we don't have a progressive income tax they make up for that with excessive sales taxes, especially on gasoline.

We live with it.

Late add: In truth, though, gas was around $3.25 just a month or so ago. $4.89 is higher than most stations around me. Our local Walmart was at $4.00 just last weekend.

There is a lot of variation in prices depending where you are. Texas tends to have prices on the lower side while Washington state is on the higher end. Different states have different taxes and regulations on gasoline.

I live in California. There's a station I fill up at by work that is $4/gal. It's currently $4.29 at my local Costco. That is pretty cheap for us given how it's been in recent years. Still nowhere near pre-Covid prices, but not the worst.

Gas prices have been see-sawing within 30 cents a gallon ($4.21 - $4.50 regular at my go to spot) since January, before the takeover on the 20th. Last week it was $4.40. Today it's $4.38. Three weeks ago it was $4.22.
I do expect it to eventually go up as they shut down two California Refineries "For Maintenance" right about time for vacation travel ..

Blend and always higher than the winter. What’s hurting the US is a lack of refineries capacity. Companies stopped building and expanding when the gov push switched to ev vehicles.

Low of about $2.35 per gallon to $2.99 a gallon. Depends on the station- smaller mom and pop stations seem to be cheaper while shell and exxon are the most expensive.
