we would have never had the atomic bomb and the moon landings ( plus a lot of the technology that helped to create such thing ) without the influx of German scientists... some pre-war, some post war but trying to avoid the Soviets ( Operation Paperclip ).

decide to leave.

The last time this happened in a big way was during McCarthyism in the 1950s, when people as prominent as Charlie Chaplin felt compelled to leave the US because of all the red-baiting.

Then too there was an exodus of writers and artists during the 1920s, during the anti-intellectualism epitomized by the Scopes Trial.

The dismantling of our cultural, intellectual, scientific infrastructure will come back to haunt us, no doubt about it.

The question is: who in this world will most benefit from all these self-inflicted MAGA inspired wounds?

because you won't see it reported on our mainstream "news" shows. Also, most Americans can't grasp the concept of what researchers from other countries bring to the US when they agree to do research at our universities. I retired from a state university where I worked in faculty hiring. I met with every new researcher from countries all over this world and saw their CV's and experience they had in their specific areas of expertise. I got to know them personally, working with our legal department in assisting them with their visa process. Some of their backgrounds were so impressive and the research they were doing important. I clearly remember one particular young man of thirty from Korea who had done extensive research in the causes of macular degeneration which I had at that time just been diagnosed with.

This is something that goes on all across our country in our universities. This country was already falling behind in the academic area, but the GOP is doing everything they can to denigrate education in the US. They would rather idologize the dumbest president in our history who only got to where he is through fraud and theft and preying on the gullible.
