General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI volunteer as a receptionist/greeter at a local food shelf two days per week.
On Monday, we are locking all the doors and no one can get in the building without being buzzed in (I do the buzzing at the busiest door). We are adopting this policy/process so ICE goons cant walk in and haul hungry people away. Forty percent of our participants, who all need free food, are immigrants.

(12,987 posts)give a rather substantial donation to the Food Bank of the Rockies every year......During Covid, we doubled it.......
Money goes so much further because they can buy the food they need at wholesale, rather than retail prices.
They are extremely well run, with countless volunteers chipping in time and energy. I think the admin costs run
about 3%..........which is incredibly low.
If any of you live in the northern front range of Colorado, consider volunteering or sending a donation.....
Your heart will glow............

(3,253 posts)The food banks don't make the food, they only distribute it

(18,777 posts)This is why I donate $$ to my local food banks.
I will occasionally support "food drives" that want us to put bags of food out. But I figure if I give $$$ directly to the food bank, then they can buy the items they need. Food drives are great for engaging the community but I suspect they don't deliver an optimal set of the most-needed food items.
(there have been posts that mention what are most-needed items that aren't often given in food drives. I remember a top item is shelf-stable milk. So when I know a food drive is coming up, I try to get some shelf-stable milk to include in my bag. I can't really remember the others except that not all recipients have easy access to cook things.)

(20,571 posts)I've donated to our foodbank and worked at our local foodshelf (a distribution point). The amount of good that can be done by just $10 is amazing. I mainly see young families - women with children at the foodshelf. It's horrific how some of humanity can be so callous and intentionally cruel.

(16,312 posts)located a couple of blocks west of the meat packing plant, when ICE raided that plant. We stood in our parking lot and watched the flashing lights, the big white busses, and the circling black helicopters. One of our staff went inside and got online to find out what was happening; he'd come out and give us updates, then go back for more news. We were horrified at what we were seeing, some in tears at our helplessness to do anything about it. At one point, one of the helicopters flew toward us and stopped overhead, tilted down to make sure we knew we were being watched. We spent much of the remaining day just shaking our heads at what we had seen.
My job was at the reception desk, and starting that same day I got to greet a steady stream of people from Greeley and the surrounding communities, people wanting to donate specifically for the families of those who had been taken. Food donations, along with money. One woman had driven over from Windsor to donate, she was in tears, and as she finished writing her check she tore it up and wrote another for twice the amount. Some people were especially worried about the children, given that Christmas was just days away; they wanted to donate toys or clothing, and we were pleased to refer them to organizations that had contacted us to receive such donations.
Suffice it to say that Weld County was not/is not a hotbed of liberalism, so getting to meet so many incredibly caring people was a blessing that I will never forget. But, yes, I've been thinking about that day a great deal with all the ICE activity. And I'm not alone in that concern. I'll be very surprised if some hell isn't unleashed around here soon.

(16,575 posts)My wife's parents are green card holders who were born in Nazi Germany, and came to America in the early 1960s. Her sisters are Trumpsky fanatics, and don't see the irony.
My first wife, long dead, was born in Mexico and became fully disabled not long after we were married. It makes me sick to think what they would have done to her.
I'll continue protesting with you!
I thought "green cards" ended under Clinton 30 or so years ago and became naturalized after five years, no?

(8,741 posts)Having a Green Card (officially known as a Permanent Resident Card) allows you to live and work permanently in the United States. The steps you must take to apply for a Green Card will vary depending on your individual situation.

We haven't had to get to that point yet, but I noticed that very few immigrants have been coming since Trump was elected.

(165,955 posts)I have always supported my local food bank and when Covid hit and I was strictly working from home I donated the gas money I saved to the food bank. I like that they send me regular updates on what is happening and yes, the need just keeps getting greater.
