I have never gotten an unsolicited email like this from Social Security before. It gushes about the passage of the "Big Beautiful Bill" and how it will allow 90% of seniors to not pay tax on their Social Security. WTF. Who sent this, Big Balls? Oh, and it states that the email "was produced and disseminated at U.S. taxpayer expense."

Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation's economy.
This is a historic step forward for Americas seniors, said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trumps promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement theyve earned."
The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. Additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they have earned.
Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

For most seniors, the Big Ugly Bill is all pain, no gain.

I started reading it then quickly realized it was Nazi propaganda.
It made my stomach churn. I couldn't believe what I was experiencing. Biden wouldn't have allowed it. The message sounded like a Musk trap.

Also, from what I understand, thanks to the requirement of RMD on my IRA, the distribution will push me over the threshold for eligibility of not being taxed on my SS. So I will be lucky enough to contribute to a tax break for billionaires by virtue of continuing to be taxed on my Social Security.
F you, orange a$$hole and every damn Republican.

(12,378 posts)Now SSA is being used for propaganda?
Can anyone explain what the bill says about Social Security earnings not being taxed? What is the income limit?
SunSeeker
(56,170 posts)That's propaganda for you.
I tried looking it up and it is far from clear. The vast majority of seniors already dont pay tax on their Social Security. But a lot of seniors will get their Medicaid cut. This Big Ugly Bill is definitely not a win for seniors.

(6,126 posts)The bill was not allowed to make any changes to SS.
The bill adds a new deduction for those 65 and over , but that is not tied to SS Benefits in any way.

(2,999 posts)By federal law, taxes on SS benefits go into the SS trust fund, so this is just another way to kill the system or at least reduce benefits later.

(6,126 posts)However, I don't believe this will have any impact (or very little impact) on the amount of money going to the Trust Fund. See my follow-up post: https://democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=20459565
Regardless, the amount of money previously collected for the Trust Fund is extremely small relatively speaking. The highest estimate I found for the impact of the bill is a loss of $30 billion in funds collected by the Trust Fund. That is out of approximately $1.7 trillion total collected annually by the trust fund.

________________________________________________________________________________________________What this means to me is when in January when the W-2 s come out, it will show what we end up owing because the US Treasury is SHORT. The same will happen to Tips and overtime as well.
Relief for Seniors? Hardly.
Wiz Imp
(6,126 posts)But that is based only on those that benefit. Many seniors already pay no income tax so this doesn't benefit them at all. The overall average benefit for seniors is likely well below $670.

Received it last night. Eliot was the first recipient on the board and sounded the alert.

WTF!
Social Security has NEVER sent out political messaging before. And how cute. This wonderful uptick will last as long as Trump is in office, add to the debt and hasten SS insolvency with all the tax cuts to the Billionaire bros.
We're not suppose to notice the poison pill in the candy.
This is a Republican CYA moment hoping we'll forget what they've done by offering a few crumbs to their senior base.
Never forget. Never forgive.
