Today and this weekend will be a test of the corporate media. We know the rushpublicans can't stand up to the NRA...but can the corporate media?? Will this "press conference" be a dog and pony show where the talking points fly but serious questions are danced around? Will we hear how awful Hollywood and video games are, yet not a word about how an assault rifle in the hands of a "troubled" person is all fine and good. I guess it's all in the timing, as usual.

You won't hear a single word about reasonable gun control...the leap (as we see here) is straight to "gun grabbing" and fear mongering. While the NRA is on the spot with some Americans, their words are golden to others...let's see if they turn this "press conference" into another fear fest to amp up gun and ammo sales...

In order for anything to be "bipartisan" at least some Republicans need to agree to something new. We shall see if anyone in the GOP is willing to consider taking a more responsible position, but if the fiscal cliff negotiations are any indication, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

I think we're on the cusp of a major sea change re: the power of the NRA and this nation's aversion to gun control. Four years ago Democrats were told that to support marriage equality and gays serving openly in the military would doom it to minority status till the end of time. Today we're being told the same thing about responsible gun regulations.

But the times, they are a'changin'.

The President wants this done fast and easy. They will invite the NRA to participate just like they did after the Virginia Tech shooting - makes every thing bipartisan and gives congressmen (R and D alike) in pro-gun districts political cover.

These jerks have no intention of offering anything by way of a compromise, and will not support any reasonable gun control legislation. Ever. Ever ever. By their own admission they want to be no part of the solution, in fact, they are the single greatest obstacle to reasonable reform.

They do want a "national data base" on people who have sought treatment for mental illness. Yeah, real civil libertarians, the NRA.

There will be no "fast and easy" solution to this problem, since the fastest and easiest solution--banning assault weapons--is a red line for the NRA. And that's just the first step. If the NRA leadership won't even CONSIDER such a ban, how will we ever get anywhere?

Some issues are beyond the usual political games. The right of our children to live being one of them. If the NRA, the GOP, and the Teabaggers don't see that (and clearly they don't) they will all be consigned to political oblivion. As well they should be.
